CAIRO, Egypt — Egypt and Hamas were negotiating a proposal for a 10-day cease-fire in Gaza, officials said Wednesday, as the Palestinian death toll in the war passed 1,000 and smoke from Israeli airstrikes rose over Gaza City's devastated streets.

Egyptian and Palestinian officials said they hoped to seal Hamas' agreement on a temporary halt in fighting, which would be presented to Israel for approval. Key uncertainties remained for a longer-term deal under which Gaza's borders would be open and Israeli troops would withdraw.

The officials provided details of the deal on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the Egypt-Hamas talks. But Egyptian officials also expressed public optimism that momentum toward a deal was growing.

U.S. officials were unable to tell FOX News where the parties stand as the U.S. has no representations at the negotiations. Officials are watching the developments from Cairo closely.

"We're working with Hamas and we're working with the Israeli side. We hope to reach an outcome soon," Hossam Zaki, a spokesman for Egypt's Foreign Ministry, told the British Broadcasting Corp.

A Hamas spokesman said he also believed an agreement was possible.

They just want a chance to reload. They are getting a major 'ass kicking' and need pleading time to Syria and Iran for help by turning Hisballah lose .Maybe Syria will take a chance and try an counter attack from the Golum but without Iran's help with a missile barrage they would be smashed.

Hisballah feels pretty good about how well they did last time lets give them another shot at the Golani,1st infantry brigade now that they have a real general in command !

Israel remains on high alert for Syrian, Hizballah attacks
Syrian Russian-made T-80 tank
After Syria moved tank units up to the Lebanese Beqaa Valley border Tuesday, Oct. 7, Israel raised the alert level for Yom Kippur on its borders with Syria and Lebanon and placed its Air Force and emergency first aid teams on standby in the event of Syrian or coordinated Syrian-Hizballah attacks.

Israeli embassies and Jewish institutions worldwide were also placed on high terror alert. The alert still stands. Hizballah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah said recently that his promised retaliation for the death of Imad Mughniyeh “is coming.

” There is no backing off from this decision or from carrying out the “big surprise” against the enemy, he said.

Damascus and the Lebanese Hizballah are closely aligned.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the Syrian tank concentration on the Lebanese border Tuesday was Damascus' second military movement against its neighbor; three weeks ago, Syrian commando units took up positions on the North Lebanese border. In the first deployment, their tanks and armored vehicles were kept some 3-10 km to the rear of frontline commando forces. In the second, much closer to the Israeli border, armor and tanks have been deployed at the front.

These military movements sent Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak on an unannounced trip north Tuesday to check the state of readiness of the IDF’s disposition on the Syrian and Lebanese borders. He cautioned the outpost commanders to exercise maximum vigilance in the coming days. The border seems quiet, he said, but commanders must take care never to permit a repeat of the Yom Kippur War exactly 35 years ago when Israel was caught napping by a Syrian invasion.

The West Bank was sealed off and Israel’s border terminals with Jordan and Egypt closed from early Wednesday, Oct. 8.

IDF Chief of Staff Ashkenazi tours Gaza battlefields

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi visted the Gaza Strip on Thursday, where he received an assesment of the IDF's campaign against Hamas in the Strip.

Ashkenazi toured the outskirts of Gaza City, where the Golani and Givati infantry brigades have been battling Gaza militants. While in Gaza, the IDF's top officer met with the head of the Givati Brigade, Colonel Ilan Malka, and the head of the Golani Brigade, Colonel Avi Peled.

Peled was lightly wounded in a clash with Gaza militants earlier in the week that left three IDF soldiers dead.

IDF troops attacked five squads of Palestinian gunmen in Gaza on Thursday, as an IDF officer was killed during a gunbattle with Hamas militants in the coastal strip.

Major Roey Rosner, 27, an officer in the Kfir infantry brigade, was killed when his unit was hit with an anti-tank missile while on patrol in the former settlement of Netzarim. Another soldier was lightly wounded in the incident.

The IDF said it hit more than 25 targets across Gaza, including nine weapons caches, most of which were located under militants' homes.

Can't say as I blame them considering the alternative. Did these idiots really think there would be no consequences for rocketing Israel? If Iran was goading them on, Iran doesn't care how many the Israelis kill since they are not Iranians being killed.

We shall see how long this cease fire lasts before they start with the rockets attacks again.

That explosion in the background is much too big for an artillery round alone. They must have hit a rocket dump !

According to Fox news it's from an airstrike, which does not mean it isn't a secondary explosion.
