If they pass this - I say we do like Glenn Back orchestrated for Gavin Dumbass in San Fagcisco - we box up all of our plastic bags and mail them to the idiot who originated the legislation.

RICHMOND -- Virginia might once and for all put an end to that nagging question: Paper or plastic?

Legislators are considering banning plastic bags at grocery stores and chain retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart because of their potential harm to the environment.

The ubiquitous bags are blamed for choking birds and fish, floating into trees, rooftops and streets and sticking around years longer than paper.

"We're wasting energy. We're polluting," said Del. Adam P. Ebbin (D-Alexandria).

Virginia is not known for progressive environmental policy, but some lawmakers want to help the state find a place in the green movement. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/21/AR2009012103538.html

So can I send all the dog shit that I put into those bags to this guys house, so he can dispose of it?

How many people will be put out of jobs because of this decision I wonder?

What can I say? I do most of my grocery shopping at one of those organic farmer's market type of places. I believe they will actually just throw your food on the floor and beat you if you don't have your own bags. :p

Well done, plastic bags are pointless when customers can bring their own better ones.

Although this officially means your old.

I started using canvas bags about a year ago. I admit I like using them much more than the plastic ones. But I do feel like a Birkenstock-wearing, granola-eating lib every time I drag them into the store with me. But so be it!

I can carry more stuff in them. They don't break when I'm taking them up three flights of stairs. And my apartment no longer overflows with the mating plastic kind.

Good for you Jen. Hey, with so many here using canvas shopping bags, wouldn't it be cool if there was a CU Canvas Shopping Bag?

Didn't they switch to plastic because it was better for the environment (trees?) in the first place?

It's a good idea.

I spoke with some vendors in Key West, and they said almost all Europeans reject the bag when offered to them ...but most Americans demand the bag.

Some were shocked when I refused the bag.

I think it means that I've got a cutting edge, hipster sort of vibe going on. Let's face it, canvas bags don't impact my sexuality (unlike some). :D

Seriously though, as others have pointed out the canvas bags are just better to use and they are all neutered. You can get more stuff into them and they are a lot easier to carry. As Rose said, you can get bags that do not have some lame corporate logo or hippy sentiment on them.

I reuse plastic grocery bags for so many things-to line my bathroom waste basket, to carry my wet swimming suit home from the pool, to bring baked goods to church and work, and so on.

Plus, autistic kids love to wave plastic shopping bags around. They're shiny and all. We should never deprive them of harmless activities that give them pleasure.
