AT least 25 people are dead in the bushfires ripping through Victoria, but the death toll could pass 40. Authorities are undertaking a grim search for more bodies this morning as horrific eyewitness accounts emerge from devastated communities.

Police Deputy Commissioner (http://search.news.com.au/search//0/?us=ndmnews&sid=1243&as=news&ac=ninews2&q=Deputy%20Commissioner) Kieran Walshe said this morning: "I can confirm that the we now have 25 people dead at this point in time.

"Our concern is still ... that we believe numbers will rise as we get further into the fire zones this morning. "At this stage, to have 25 confirmed deceased, that gives me great concern that the numbers are going to get substantially higher as the day goes on."

Last night he said the death toll "could get into the 40s".
