President Barack Obama will soon issue an executive order lifting an eight-year ban embryonic stem cell research imposed by his predecessor, President George W Bush, according to a senior adviser.

"We're going to be doing something on that soon, I think. The president is considering that right now," David Axelrod said on Fox News Sunday.

In one of the most controversial acts of his presidency, Mr Bush in 2001 limited federal funding for stem cell research only to human embryonic stem cell lines that already existed.

It was a gesture to his conservative Christian supporters who regard embryonic stem cell research as destroying potential life, because the cells must be extracted from human embryos.

Embryonic stem cells are the most basic human cells which can develop into any type of cell in the body.

Scientists believe the research could eventually produce cures for a variety of diseases, including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease and spinal cord injuries.

Mr Obama vowed to reverse Mr Bush's ban during his presidential campaign and in his inaugural address last month promised to return science to its proper place in the United States.

The US Food and Drug Administration last month cleared the way for the first trial to see if human embryonic stem cells could treat people safely.

The trial will try to use stem cells from already existing lines to regrow nerve tissue in patients with crushed spinal cords.

This was one of the few things I was glad to see limited on too many reasons.

I have no problem with stem cell research, just Embryonic Stem Cell research. To date, no medical discovery have come from this line of research, but we have made a large number from regular stem cell research.

On top of it, was this jewel.

The thought that the wealthy and celeb elite will use Embryonic Stem Cells in a vain attempt to ward off aging. This never sits well with me. That an innocent unborn life was snuffed out so some rich snob could look a few years longer for just a few months or so.

In addition, researchers claim that using aborted fetuses could supply their needs in cures, the problem then becomes, if/when medical cures/treatments are found, demand will grow, and those supplies most certainly won't last, thus creating a demand for more unborn be sacrificed in the name of these cures. Thus creating a market.
