NASA scientists must have thought they were going batty when they noticed a tiny black speck on space shuttle Discovery's fuel tank.
It was a bat, clinging to the orange foam for dear life.
Launch controllers spotted the winged creature before Sunday's liftoff, but did nothing, assuming the lost animal would be startled and fly away after the engines ignited.
The bat, however, could still be seen as the spacecraft cleared the tower. It most likely died quickly as the shuttle rocketed into orbit.
