Steven Waterhouse, 52, captured the display on camera as the owl hurled itself vertically into the sky from a fence post.
Mr Waterhouse, of Plympton, Devon, spotted the tawny owl on a nature trail near his home and says the image is a "once in a lifetime" shot.
