Oliphant Israel-Gaza cartoon called 'hideously anti-Semitic'

The latest cartoon by the most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world has raised the ire of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which is dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism.

The ADL's director called the syndicated cartoon, published Wednesday and reprinted below, "hideously anti-Semitic."

"Pat Oliphant's outlandish and offensive use of the Star of David in combination with Nazi-like imagery is hideously anti-Semitic," Abraham Foxman said in a statement released Wednesday. "It employs Nazi imagery by portraying Israel as a jack-booted, goose-stepping headless apparition. The implication is of an Israeli policy without a head or a heart."

As of late Wednesday, Oliphant had not responded publicly to the ADL's criticism of the cartoon.

Israel in late December launched a three-week offensive in Gaza which left over 1,300 Palestinians dead and countless of homes destroyed. The offensive was a retaliation for Palestine rocket attacks on Israeli territory. Rocket attacks from Gaza and Israeli military responses have occurred sporadically since the end of the offensive.

A few points about this:

To my knowledge, no Jews have rioted, issued fatwas or threatened to behead Olipant over this cartoon. As a result, it is readily available in a number of venues that lacked the guts to reprint the Danish cartoons, including the Washington Post.
A month ago, Sean Delonas did a cartoon in which a chimpanzee that had run amok was put down by police, who then lamented that there would be no one available to draft the next stimulus bill. The assumption that Delonas was comparing the chimp to Obama resulted in demands that the NY Post be shut down. The depiction of a headless, but obviously Israeli/Jewish monster goose-stepping in jackboots, a much more obvious comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany, has not raised similar demands for the shutdown of the Washington Post or other liberal papers that ran it.
It's a crappy cartoon. The face on the Star of David is poorly drawn and makes little sense, and why is it wheeled? What, aside from a general menacing image, is this supposed to evoke? Is he saying that Israel is devouring Gaza or forcing Palestinians off of a cliff? If so, that's a pretty flimsy wheel.

On the plus side, at least Gator will have something to color when he gets his new set of crayons.

I'm never for censorship and think the cartoon should be allowed without any calls for death or destruction like the Danish cartoons were. But I'm with the Sir, this cartoon looks like crap and the message it's trying to convey is racist and disgusting. F this cartoon. This shite is drawn worse than Family Guy.

You have to love how Israel is the monster agressor and the palestiniats are being portrayed as a little old lady babe in arm running away . . . . what a tool!

If anything, it ought to show how Hamas hides behind the little old ladies and babies. Fortunately, a lot of other cartoonists got it right.
