ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Rescuers were digging through rubble with bare hands for survivors after a powerful earthquake hit a remote region of central Italy Monday, killing at least 50 people, leaving thousands homeless and destroying many historic buildings.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi declared a state of emergency, warning the death toll from 6.3-magnitude quake could be much higher than the figure, including five children, so far reported by local media.
