Researchers believe that the time consuming act of slapping on lipstick or applying blusher could serve as a form of stretching exercise, improving people's balance and co-ordination.

A study led by the research communications director from the cosmetics giant L'Oreal found that older women who applied make-up in the morning stood straighter and had fewer falls than those who did not.

Dr Patricia Pineau, of the University of St Etienne in France, claimed that the findings could help prevent many debilitating accidents.

Her team studied 100 women aged between 65 and 85 as part of a study originally intended to measure the effect of wearing make-up on self esteem.

They were fitted with belts to measure their posture and given special insoles to test their centre of gravity.

The team concluded that those who wore even a small amount of make-up appeared to be more stable on their feet.

Yet again the French are there to help us out with the important research no one can live without.

Or women who are mobile enough to care about make-up have better balance than their scooter-dependent sisters.

With the caveat that they do the deed at home...... before trying to apply behind the wheel of a motor vehicle on the way to work.

By my own count, the last seven serious attempts on my life on the Nations Roads have been females either putting on makeup, fixing their hair or yapping on cell phones. :(

Somewhere down the line some brilliant Sociologist will do a study that demonstrates that cell phone users have shorter life spans than non-cell phone users. There will be some perplexity as to why this is true. Accidents due to attention distraction of cell phone yapping will never be noticed as a leading cause of that statistical anomaly.

The really hard part will be finding the "control group" of non-cell phone users. :o
