ALTON, Ill. A disabled Alton woman is mourning her beloved miniature dachshund, "Roscoe," even though the 1-year-old dog is believed to have gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep.

...

A veterinarian said the toe had been bandaged because of a healing hangnail and that may have somehow attracted the dog.

That dachshund/alligator cross was never going to be a success.

Alton is a small town across from St. Louis, across the river in Illinois. The poor woman had diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. She has no feeling in her feet. She did wake up when she saw the artery had been chewed through.

Saw they put the pooch down and the woman is still in the hospital.

That explains it. I had a diabetic friend who lost half her foot to a sore that she didn't even know she had. She couldn't feel pain either.
