We have a tie for our debate/discussion book so you will need to cast your vote between the two contenders.

I'm going to have to go with 1984... just because I like the song by David Bowie off the Diamond Dogs album.

I'm going with the Farm. I would think that would get more debate around here--themes of communism and government corruption.

Although 1984 has some interesting possibly relevant themes, the collectivism of the farm is something that is on everyones mind right now with the 'redistribution of wealth.'

If Old Major is Karl Marx, then who would he be today and why?

I can go either way, but I'm voting for 1984 just because I read it more recently than Farm.

Have you ever been whipped into a murderous patriotic frenzy? If so, describe the circumstances.

What freedoms and privileges would you be willing to permanently sacrifice to ensure public safety and loyalty to the state?

Are you more of a 'prole' or a 'party member'?

War is Peace and "1984" could be "Animal Farm". The poll isn't closed yet. :p

Animal Farm is right there beside it. http://www.george-orwell.org/Animal_Farm/index.html

I vote Animal Farm, because the truths of 1984 are being blatantly played out in front of us, here and in Britain. The truths of Animal Farm aren't quite as blatant, and need to be brought to light for the government educated masses. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others, anyone?

I would say 1984 is the previous administration and Animal Farm is more relevant to the current administration.

If you want Orwell, at least do Homage to Catalonia. It portrays the dilema that moderates found themselves in caught between Stalin and Hitler.

However, if you really wish to experience the horrors of the totalitarian state, read Koestler's Darkness at Noon.

I believe we are headed toward 1984. There's a video going around from some whiny woman droning on about how we're consumed by stuff and she shows a little cartoon with a gubment official shining the shoes of a capitalist wearing a top hat. Reminded me of that cartoon Winston was recalling about the capitaists in their top hats. Also, the 3 class system is in the works. We have the Inner Party-The politicians, Hollywood elite, the George Soro's of the world. Then there's the outer party-The media. The government workers. ACORN. Then there's everyone else. The Proles. Unfortunately for me, I fall into the Outer Party as I am a state employee(corrections officer) but know that I'd probably be first in line for Room 101.

A Modest Proposal. Why don't we do 1984 for a week, Animal Farm for a week, Homage to Catalonia for a week, and then spend a week comparing/contrasting the attitude towards the political spectrum.

All of these books are available free, online.
