Secretary of State Handel Hails U.S. Supreme Court Denial of Appeal to Georgia’s Photo ID Statute (http://www.wctv.tv/news/headlines/47221522.html)

From the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State:

Atlanta – Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel today hailed a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to deny a writ of certiorari by challengers to the State’s photo ID statute. With this denial, a January 2009 decision of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold Georgia’s photo ID law is final.

“Today’s denial of yet another challenge to our common sense photo ID law represents a long-fought victory for Georgia voters and the security of our elections,” Secretary Handel said. “After four years of litigation by special interest groups, plaintiffs are still unable to find one Georgia voter who was unable to cast a ballot due to our photo ID law.”

Since Georgia’s photo ID law was implemented in 2006, voters have cast over 9 million ballots in over 15 elections, including the record-setting November 2008 General Election in which nearly 4 million Georgians voted. In that election, 92 percent of votes were cast in person with a photo ID.

“I want to thank Governor Perdue, the Georgia Legislature, and particularly Senator Cecil Staton for sponsoring our photo ID law and supporting our multiphase, multimedia outreach and education effort,” Secretary Handel added. Georgia’s photo ID law has now withstood challenges in Fulton County Superior Court, U.S. District Court, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

it’s a “common sense” issue

I wondered why it had encountered so much opposition.

If showing an ID henders the poor from voting, I can not understand how the black mayor in B.R. got elected by a 70% majority when blacks make up only 55% of the voters. Acorn is active in N.O. but not here.

having to show an ID before voting cuts way back on the democrats chances of winning. It's very unfair to limit democrats to one vote apeace.

Glad to see common sense on any court-it's been exceptionally rare for about the last two decades.

The funny thing about it is that every time the subject of ID's when voting automatically it's deemed unfair to minorities. How so, I ask? You need an ID to take a crap anymore in this country. You need an ID to buy alcohol. Do minorities not drink alcohol? You need an ID to fly in a plane. Do minorities not fly in planes? You need an ID to obtain a membership at Blockbuster. Do minorities not rent movies? You need an ID to drive. Do minorities not drive cars? You now need an ID to buy certain over the counter cold medications. Do minorities not get colds? You need an ID to get a players club card at a casino. Do minorities not go to casinos? You need an ID to rent a car or check into hotels. Do minorities not travel? You need an ID to open up a bank account. Do minorities not have bank accounts? Shall I go on or have I made my point.

I'm not sure what you mean by some of these?

Are you talking about people who break the law--driving w/o a lic. etc.?

And why do you have be in the players club to go to a casino.
