GARDNER, MA — A Park Street resident is being held on bail on charges that he assaulted his wife and threw her out of a second-story window on Father's Day. Derek R. Putnam, 36, of 86 Park St. was arraigned Monday before Gardner District Court Judge Patrick A. Fox on charges of aggravated assault and battery, assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (concrete stairs). When they arrived, they found Nicole R. Putnam, 35, sitting on the pavement outside the apartment building rocking back and forth, her face and hands covered with blood. Edward Hammond, a motorist who was driving past and saw her rolling down the building's concrete steps and out onto the street, was with her. He told police that the victim told him her husband had thrown her out of the window.
Officer Cormier said he and Officer Czasnowski then went upstairs and spoke with Mr. Putnam. He told the officers his wife jumped out the window and he didn't know how bad her injuries were because he couldn't bring himself to look. After the police officers noticed a can of beer on a windowsill of the front porch, Mr. Putnam told them he had been drinking.
