Karl Malden, the Academy Award-winning actor whose intelligent characterizations on stage and screen made him a star despite his plain looks, died Wednesday, his family said. He was 97.
Malden died of natural causes surrounded by his family at his Brentwood home, they told the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. He served as the academy's president from 1989-92.
While he tackled a variety of characters over the years, he was often seen in working-class garb or military uniform. His authenticity in grittier roles came naturally: He was the son of a Czech mother and a Serbian father, and worked for a time in the steel mills of Gary, Ind., after dropping out of college. ...

My husband and I are always pleased and surprised at Hollywood marriages of long duration. Karl Malden's record will be hard to beat; he and his wife Mona were married on December 18, 1938- almost seventy-one years.

Loved his portraryal of General Bradley in Patton. A real classy actor.

I was reading in his obit that at one point in the film, he (as Bradley) was going to yell his head off at Patton. The real Omar Bradley, who was advising him, said no, he would speak more quietly. Malden asked why, and Bradley said, "Because I have one more star on my shoulder than he does." :)

R.I.P. to Mr. Malden; a true Star when there were actually real "Movie Stars".
He was great in Streets of San Francisco.
But here he is with another great actor - in one of the best movies ever made: On the Waterfront.
