PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Teen strippers, 16 and 17 year-olds are taking off their clothes for money.

In Rhode Island minors can legally dance at gentlemen's clubs. But now, there is a push to close that loophole.

After reading through the state law on exploitation for commercial use we found discovered there is nothing prohibiting teens from stripping. One local group says if lawmakers don't act now more young people could become victims of sexual abuse.

Police learned a 16-year-old runaway was working as a stripper at Cheaters Gentlemen's Club in Providence. The manager declined to comment, though his club has done nothing wrong. State law does not stop teenagers from stripping.

O'Reilly was discussing this topic with a couple of very intelligent ladies tonight. So there were at least 2 people on stage with a brain. It may actually be worse than you've stated. Is it true that indoor prostitution is legal in R.I.? These ladies said that was the case. The age of consent is 16. So if a 16 year old girl finishes her strip, she could approach a customer and arrange for a sexual encounter in a back room. There are 2 rules and I am not joking. The strip club management can not manage the prostitution side of it and the girls have to be home by 11:30 on school nights.

Someone needs to torch places that hire children to work in these dumps.

There are a lot of those places around metro Detroit, and some are well-known for producing fake IDs for their dancers. When I was a delinquency worker, one out by the airport was hiring the runaway girls on our caseloads. The police check those places on a regular basis, but there is only so much they can do with limited manpower when there are so many of these establishments.

I must admit that I find peoples reactions to stories like this amusing - especially when the people who object to this at the same time have no problem with a girl that age being sexually active or with her walking around looking like a stripper . . . it's only when they actually get paid for it that some people start to object!

I understand what you are saying, but I think the disgust comes in not so much because she is making money off of her sexuality, but because a bar owner is making money from it. Also, the strip clubs and prostitution are connected in many areas- there is the concern that working as a stripper introduces vulnerable girls to the world of prostitution.

All that stuff is a far cry from a teenaged girl having sex with her teenaged boyfriend in the backseat of his car. That's not a good thing, but it's not as evil as the exploitation of teenaged girls by the sex industry. Titty bars, porno, it's all the same thing and it's all for people over 18 years of age.

I have a question. Is 16 legally a minor in RI? Where I'm at, a sixteen year old cannot be a stripper or certain other things, but they are legally adults in other ways. They can move out of the house without parental permission. The parents can kick them out for no good reason. Sixteen year olds are considered to be old enough to have sex with somebody up to four years older than them here.

So my question is whether RI completely consideres 16 year olds to be minors.

Sixteen is the magic number in R.I.. The law does state one thing that might make a reasonable person to conclude that a 16 yr old can't strip.

http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/Statutes/TITLE11/11-9/11-9-1.HTM

(c) Every person who shall exhibit, use, employ or shall in any manner or under pretense so exhibit, use, or employ any child under the age of eighteen (18) years to any person for the purpose of prostitution or for any other lewd or indecent act shall be imprisoned not exceeding twenty (20) years, or be fined not exceeding twenty thousand dollars ($20,000), or both. But from what I understand, R.I. doesn't consider exotic dancing to be lewd or indecent. And as of today, prostitution behind closed doors is legal in R.I.. So a 16 yr old could legally dance and then solicit a customer for sex if it was totally her doing.

Don't think that R.I. is TOTALLY mindless though.

11-9-19.1 Possession of spray paint by a minor. (a) No person under the age of eighteen (18) years shall have in his or her possession or under his or her control any aerosol container of spray paint. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be subject to a requirement of up to fifty (50) hours of community restitution work. (b) Subsection (a) of this section shall not apply to possession or use of aerosol spray paint containers on property owned or rented by the minor or his or her parent(s) or guardian(s).
So you see, R.I. realizes that a 16 year old is mature enough to take her clothes off for strangers and then engage in sex for money, but can't be trusted not to tag a building with a can of spray paint.

There is another parallel issue here - I'm sure RI feels - and if not RI, many of the people who are up in arma about her dancing for money - that a 16 yo is capable of making a life or death choice in having an abortion without parental consent - but she's not mature enough to dance erotically and get paid for it?

I don't know what RI's law is, but Michigan has a parental consent law about abortion. A girl can still go get birth control pills behind her parents' backs, but to get an abortion, she needs to see a judge if she doesn't want her parents to know about it. Since there aren't any abortion clinics in the counties with the most conservative judges (Ottawa, Livingston and Kent), odds are she's going to file that in Wayne/Oakland/Macomb/Washtenaw/Ingham Counties, where the odds are her case will be heard by a liberal female judge.

This doesn't come up much with foster kids, though. Most of them want to keep their babies, for better or worse.

I'm pro choice, but I support parental consent laws. It's major surgery-someone needs to consent, whether it's a parent or a court.

And how often does the court make a minor go to their parents for consent?
