WILLOW SPRINGS, N.C. -- Neighbors of a North Carolina man suspected of plotting international terrorism said the suspect was open about his conversion from Christianity to Islam.
Officials have charged seven North Carolina residents with supporting terrorism by recruiting people to fight overseas. Officials said the six used private property in rural Caswell County to practice military tactics and weapon-use. All seven, which included the alleged ringleader, 39-year-old Daniel Boyd and his two sons, are charged with providing material support to terrorism as well as conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons abroad.
"They're great neighbors. We've never had any trouble with them. Their kids play with our kids," one of Boyd's neighbors said. " You just don't know. This day and age -- you just don't know who your neighbors are."
The Justice Department in Washington said Boyd, who is a U.S. citizen, trained in Afghanistan and fought there between 1989 and 1992, and when he returned to the United States he recruited others.
Federal indictments say Boyd is a veteran of violent jihad training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan and, for the last 3 years, helped recruit and arrange travel for other terrorists.
