(My apologies if this July 31 article was already posted here on DU. I'm temporarily without Internet service, and haven't been to DU in days.)

For a crazy, demonstrably false, racist idea, these are discouraging numbers.

But I was especially surprised by the regional breakdowns. In the Northeast, West, and Midwest, the overwhelming majorities realize the president is a native-born American. But notice the South -- only 47% got it right and 30% are unsure.

Outside the South, this madness is gaining very little traction, and remains a fringe conspiracy theory. Within the South, it's practically mainstream.


Of course everything we do is grounded in racism!

3. Yes. It's the Old South that finds it so hard to believe a black man is their president.
25% of all Southerners are unreconstructed Confederates.

I need someone to explain to me how is asking to see a birth certificate racist? Hell, even I don't buy into this birth certificate crap but for fucks sakes, wanting to see it is to racism as bass fishing is to the ballet.

Obama may well have been born in the USA but that is NOT the bar. The required standard is Natural Born Citizen which he clearly is not given that his father was a British Subject at the time of his birth.

So was Chester Alan Arthur's father, and no one questioned his eligibility.

The Reality is that he was challenged by opponents on that very basis........AND used the same tactic as Obama of ignore ignore ognore.

BTW he was noted for his corruption- they called him the spoilsman.
