5. That is an eternal paradox
Frankly, I find the common man to be a little too...common
but his life still has meaning
and he deserves
equality, justice, and freedom from want

Freedom from want? I translate that to nothing to live for.... Shouldn't we always be aspiring to something?

Rockwell had an "utopian" vision of the country.

Actually, he based the series on FDR's "four freedoms" speech of 1941.

I'd really like his ugly mug off of the dime.
But they'd probably just replace him with Obumble.

If you notice the rest of the caption, it says that "freedom from want" and "freedom from fear" are "OURS... to fight for" In other words, it's the job of the American people to fight for those things in our own lives.

Contrast that with the caption on the other 2: "Freedom of speech" and "freedom of worship" both say "buy war bonds". War bonds support the government, so in other words, it's the governments job to help protect those 2 freedoms, as they are outlined in the Constitution.

Is it just pure chance that the captions are what they are? I don't really think so... The American people, and all people, should strive against fear and to fulfill their wants themselves, those are not the role of government, while protecting our Constitutional freedoms is their job. I think Rockwell knew that, and captioned the pictures appropriately.
