View Full Version : Pictures of our backyard.....

I was rinsing off the deck and decided to take a few pictures to show some family that live out of state and I thought I would share some of the pictures with you all.

We have been working in our backyard for months. My husband tore apart our old pond and rebuilt it (made it deeper and wider). We had someone take up our old deck that was presure treated lumber and put down cedar (the shape is the exact same way my husband built it the first time) and build an arbor. We also put chopped stone around our planting beds. Our yard has been a friggen mess for months. My husband got the ceiling fan up last weekend and we are finished for the most part. Of course what project is ever truly finished?!?

I took so many pictures that I can't decide which ones to post so I'm sorry if some of them are overkill.

I thought I would show you a couple water lilies that recently bloomed. The purple one is called "Bagdad" (no "h") and is a tropical water lily. The yellow one is a hardy water lily but I don't remember what it is called.

OMG, it's gorgeous, truly lovely! I was going to post pics of my little bitty garden, but I'd be ashamed. You've done a wonderful job. I don't know what's nicer, your kitchen or your back yard and pool.

I love that little pond with all the rock work. Did you have a landscape architect design that for you?

Actually before we decided to built the arbor and redo the deck I wanted to hire a landscape architect because I was so frustrated with our backyard. We decided against it and my husband actually designed the way he wanted the arbor to look and where it was to be located. We have those tall windows and it was a very odd space to work with. The pond was all my husbands doing.

If you look at ponds on the internet there are more ugly ones that pretty ones. Even a lot of the ones that are professionally done look crappy. My husband is an industrial designer so I guess it's in his blood. I do all the planting and he does all the manual labor. :p

I'm really happy with this bed I did. Well my son and husband laid the chopped stone but I did the planting. Actually my son dug some of the holes.....:p

Compliments to you and your husband in the designs. I have an ex-relative who is a Harvard trained landscape architect (has a master's in it), and I like your designs better. She does commercial work and some unusual work in her own backyard. She painted the pool black and put the lilies in the pool. Then the tadpoles, then the inevitable frogs came into the pool. Couldn't believe they would swim in there. The place was weirdly interesting. The castor bean plants always bothered me, as they were so poisonous.

That pond looks like a professional did it. Also like the garden along the fence. Those caladium plants are beautiful. I had some last year, but didn't see any in the nursery where I picked up this year's plants.

Would love to visit Texas one of these days. It's been too many years since I've been there.

I think most Texas places have a privacy fence. I know when I lived in San Antonio the majority of the homes in my neighborhood had them. I loved it and glad that I have one now.

Your yard has to be pretty big to accomodate such a big pool and have that pond and large patio. It's truly beautiful.

Yes, our neighbors are way too close. Thankfully there is nothing behind us. My friend who lives on the other side of the street has houses all around her. When her neighbors are upstairs they can see right into their backyard and see her in the pool.

The way our house is situated it almost makes it suffocating on the deck. It's almost like it is protected from the wind. The fan really makes a difference.

They make fans that are rated for wet or damp locations. Obviously because our arbor has areas that are open we had to have a fan that is rated wet.

Originally, he envisioned a ground-level main pond with a complex waterfall. He rethought his engineering when he saw the Collie taking over a kiddie pool we set up for kids at a party.

The new design is seated in a rocky wall about 2 feet high and the other components will be much higher. Of course, the Collie is kind of athletic. :D

Thanks, LL, those pics are so cute. The white one with ticking looks a lot like Xena. The pic is especially cute of the dark grey and the Xena lookalike floating together. It reminds me of Darlene and Xena, the two buddies.

I need to get a kiddie pool so I can give them a bath easier. They'll make a mess in the bathtub in the house. One has those shower doors, so it would be really tough to get them in there.

Our older schnauzer doesn't like water but the other one loves it. She will go into the beach entry of the pool and lay down in the water. She will even put her whole head under water. She wont go in the pond though but they both drink from it. They both watch the fish swim back and forth but don't bother them. Once when Toby was just a puppy he did get one out of the pond and on to the deck. I happened to be outside when it happened, I just threw it back in and it wasn't hurt. Since then he hasn't bothered the fish.

You wouldn't nbelieve how many perennials (sp?) I gave away. People came over with SUV's filled with empty boxes. I just wanted to get the gardens down to something we coulld easily manage. My major contributions are the rocks. I got most while out fishing by myself. The big white piece of quartz took me about an hour to flip about 200 yards thru the woods then up an 8 ft bank and into my blazer. :)
