CLEVELAND (AP) - Shares of National City Corp. plunged Monday amid broad fears about the health of the nation's regional banks, and the company was forced to issue a statement reassuring investors of its soundness.

The Cleveland-based company said it has experienced no unusual depositor or creditor activity and has more than $12 billion in excess short-term liquidity.

Investors have been worried about the solvency of some banks amid the sharp downturn in the mortgage market. Late Friday the government seized IndyMac Bancorp, marking the second-largest failure of a financial institution in U.S. history.

National City has been among those hit hardest by rising mortgage defaults. It recently raised $7 billion in cash to shore up its capital base. The bank said the recent cash infusion has helped it to maintain a strong capital ratio.

Shares of National City fell to their lowest level in decades before rebounding slightly, and were down 22 percent at $3.45 in mid-afternoon trading.

National City spokeswoman Kristen Baird Adams said the statement was meant to quash speculation that "indicated that there was perhaps some kind of unusual activity at National City today."

The statement "just reiterated a couple of messages about our capital ratios which are important," she said.

National City was among many bank stocks to tumble three days after the government stepped in to save IndyMac.

Not to worry. FDIC covers amounts up to 100k

Gloom and doom, gloom and doom. We are far away from the 1,600 banks that closed from 1980 to 1994.

Well lets examine that figure: How many were of the magnitude of this institution and were immediately claimed "safe" by the federal government, on a weekend? When did that ever happen before?

Don't worry! Georgie's coming on just about now and I'm sure he'll tell us that he's been "workin' hard" on the problem.

Bush calls on Congress to pass housing, energy
Jul 15 10:45 AM US/Eastern / By TERENCE HUNT / AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush urged lawmakers on Tuesday to move quickly in putting into force legislation designed to help prop up mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while declaring the nation's financial system to be "basically sound."

He also called on the Democratic-run Congress to follow his example and lift a ban on offshore drilling to help increase domestic oil production.

"I readily concede it won't produce a barrel of oil tomorrow, but it will reverse the psychology," Bush told a White House news conference.

Bush said the two troubled mortgage companies play a central role in the nation's housing-finance system and that government action to help them were not bailouts, since the two would remain shareholder-owned companies.

"I don't think the government ought to be involved in bailing out companies," Bush said.

Amid soaring gas prices, the toughest real estate market in decades, falling home prices and financing that's harder to come by, Bush said: "It's been a difficult time for many American families."

(when in doubt, reiterate the obvious)

Georgie cited , as part of his "good news," retail sales being up, implying it was a result of the stimulus checks. He also indicated that more spending was coming as a result of these checks (one wonders how long it takes to spend a few hundred bucks?). What he didn't speak of was the "buying down" trend in that the retailers with higher sales are all the cheap crap super stores.

Things are so getting so bad that he might have to start buying booze at those cheaper stores; Georgie has screwed up everything that many of those hot shots in NYC will not be able to afford those 1st class whorehouses (escort services).

Hey, thanks for the info. I don't drink a lot of Macallan, but I do drink Caol Ila (my current favorite). However, I'll still pay the extra in order to avoid the WallyCostTargMarts of the world. :D There's actually quite a nice wine shop around the corner from our building that has a very good selection of single malts, all in the price ranges attributed in the article to the Costcos.

You can rest easy, as escorts are some of the most agile businesspersons around. Their rates generally adjust very quickly to the general economic conditions.

BTW, an "escort service" generally implies outcall, while a "whorehouse" generally means incall. Just sayin'.

Don't know old Eliot. However, if I were to advise him I would tell him two things: (1) don't make your reputation on cracking down on a victimless crime that really should be legal, particularly when indulging yourself in that practice and (2) don't pay $4000 for a Jersey girl just because the agency promises anonimity.

In addition to the above, I could probably offer him some expert advice in logistics, selection, etc., but then I'd have to charge him for that. After all, I make my living as a consultant.

The effectiveness of your consulting service may have nothing to do with the how, what and where but everything to do with the individual who runs his mouth off about his affairs. Gary Hart, Dick Morris, Bubba and Spitz. come to mind. These married guys don't think they will get discovered.

And look at where they are all now. Gary Hart is regarded by most Dims and many Indies as an "elder statesman." Dick Morris is somewhat of a conservative icon. WJC, despite the obvious hatred of him on this board, left office with an extremely high approval rating, much higher than the Idiot Child currently in office will leave with, and remains very popular today (albeit a bit dented by the recent campaign). Spitz is going to be the odd man out, since he, as I indicated before, made his reputation as a prosecutor of prostitution. And they all are, with the possible exception of Gary Hart (?), still married to their original spouses (for whatever that's worth).

Get over it. Most people, excepting those sanctimonious pricks with sticks up their a**es who want to mind everyone else's business because they lead very dull lives themselves, don't really care about prostitution and think that affairs are between a husband and his wife.

On edit: And the mention of the Idiot Child reminds me this thread was about Georgie's economic incompetence, before you diverted it to a discussion of prostitution. It would be nice to get it back on topic. Since the archives may be lost, perhaps you would like to start a thread regarding the horrible sin of prostitution and whether or not it should be legalized.

Must have realy hit a nerve about men cheating. You are a faithless scumbag for cheating on your much adorned mail order baltic dentist girlfriend with whores. I knew it would not take long for a 50ish balding old man like you to revert back to his old ways. Additonally, she will find someone much younger with a HOUSE and a CAR (BMW) and with a bigger BANK ACCOUNT.

Oh my God, you are naive, aren't you Pogo? Have you ever been out of the swamps in your life? You should try it. But, I guess some senile hick who's only sucked off of the government teat all his life (something most conservatives abhor, btw, except of course when it's one of their own) can't be expected to know much about the world.

And, I count exactly 2, possibly 3 posts regarding booze, while you, as usual, have diverted this thread into one about prostitution, somthing you, as the celebrated Mowzurri Gentleman, do with great frequency.

I have been in that world of booze, broads and partying. Came to my senses. Unlike you, prostitution has never been my bag. An ugly, aging, 50sih, bald with a (Napoleonic) little man complex has to resort to whores (excuse me, escort services). That's why you do not have a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out. No house, no car. You rent everything including your monkeys by the HOUR. That's not the world I want to live in.

Your ex girlfriend left your cheating ass. Good thing you did not buy her that BMW. Next time you want to teach someone to drive, enroll them in a driving school, dummy. You got another mail order one in the works. Buuuuaaaaahhhhaaaaa

I got a warm and fuzzy feeling when my S.S. check came in today knowing that you are doing your part to pay for it. Retirement check will be deposited in a couple of weeks. Retirement is great. Be happy.

Just be glad you live down in a Southern sweat box, because other retirees like yourself in the NE are going to be dying by Christmas and GWB wonít give a pubic hair about it because heíll be out of office in less than a month.

*sigh* Where to start? First, anyone so stupid as to not know the difference between the Balkans and the Baltic states and to know that "mail order brides," as you so glibly phrase it, are not available (particularly not in the boom years (for her country) of the late 90s early 2000s) from where my girlfriend originates, is beyond pathetic. Is this the level of education you receive down in Pickyunose country? Perhaps if you refrained from sleeping your cousins so much down there in the swamps, you might know these things.

I guess I'll take a shot at the "bald" as well, although I probably shouldn't. I'm of Irish descent and when I was 25 had hair thicker than most women's. While it's thinner now, it certainly, under no stretch of the imagination, might be termed "balding."

My "ex-girlfriend?" You mean she's left me in the last three hours! Damn! That's the problem with dem girlfriendie things, you gotta watch them every minute or they just vanish on you.

Honestly, this is gonna be my last post in this thread. You've hijacked it and you can now have it. I guess I have to consider why I would even respond in the first place to a senile old hick, who's never been married (you know what that means, don't you? not that there's anything wrong with that.), who thinks that people don't have sex thousands of times in their lives (shocking!), who's worked for the government all his life and his one big adventure was to live briefly in DC, and who is so misinformed about the world. I'll leave you with a quote from George Bernard Shaw (he was one of them furin playwrights):

he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature

If the dipshits in NE were not so opposed to drilling and other forms of alternative sources of energy, they might not be in this mess with heating oil and natural gas prices going thru the roof. The politicians in that part of the country brought it on themselves. Even fat Teddy did not like the idea of those windmills because he might see one while sailing. Maybe the voters will throw the (D & R ) bums out.

Very few things in life are free. However, I would not fork over a couple of thousand bucks to sleep with the most beautiful whore in the world. Like I said, if you are old, ugly, no charm or technique in meeting women, I guess you have to get sex where you can. For CW, that's at a whore house. He needs to keep us posted on his next mail order girlfriend. You know, it gets expensive paying for plane tickets and providing support. I am in total agreement with your free statement.

Being a freak is more likely plus anyone calling themselves a bastard even in jest is pretty low class scum. I worked 80 hours a week when I was married and I made time. Sex was the best part of our marriage.

BTW, if this dirtbag want to bet me that I was not married, he can load the wagon. He is too chickenshit to bet though unless it's a sure thing.
