All 118 elements of the periodic table, from hydrogen to lawrencium, are being brought to life in a series of YouTube videos filmed at a British university.
The lively clips are intended to bring chemistry to generations of students turned off the subject by the rote learning of elements at school.
Each element of the table will have its own video, in which its properties are described by a member of the University of Nottingham’s chemistry faculty.
... The sodium video, which shows the element fizzing vigorously after being dropped in water, is already the most viewed on the website.
Also popular is the oxygen film, in which cotton wool covered with liquid oxygen is detonated, to cheers and giggles from the demonstrating scientists.
"I thought it was a really great way of communicating our enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to a wider audience," said Professor Martyn Poliakoff, the internationally-renowned chemist who introduces most of the elements.
