Somebody help me out here.. We all know that nobody does anything any more unless they stand to gain from it. But lately I've noticed several ads for free online games that are like WoW,and they say that they're free forever.. Here's one example: http://www.evony.com/ Has anyone signed up to one of these games and found out just what the catch is? In case you don't know, World of Warcraft charges a monthly fee to play after the 30-day trial period, and that's how they make money.

I can't speak to that one, but in general they can afford to be free because it's orders of magnitude cheaper to run one than to run WoW. They're browser based and real time interaction is generally limited.

Also, they'll usually display ads while you're playing, so they make some cash from that.

While most of them are free to play, most of them also offer various advantages if you're willing to purchase them.

What he said. Lots of ads while playing or logging in to play and a "premium" account option that has lots of nifty bonuses. I imagine there are some whose members email addresses get slipped to various mailing list generators as well for a few more bucks profit. And what I've seen of them, they are generally flashbased with little online interaction. Now, with many FPS companies releasing their game engines to the open source community, several free shooters have come about. Urban Terror is one I like.
Some folks on another forum say Evony is a pretty good Civilization-type game, but personally, I find the ad campaign distasteful.

In case you don't know, World of Warcraft charges a monthly fee to play after the 30-day trial period, and that's how they make money.Well I play two that are free to play, but offer "Premium" as well.

One is Tribal Wars.
http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geuy3.06VK3AsA8ZRXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTBybnZlZnR lBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkAw--/SIG=11e9cnk8q/EXP=1252468094/**http%3a//www.tribalwars.net/

It offers two forms of Premium. First is what most take, Allows additional build, and allows for quick buttons that make game playing faster and easier.

Its second removes all the ads that take up space on the screen and are anoying.

The second I play is "The West"
http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geu9Z11KVKRQ4A6oRXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTByamlqaW9 mBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMwRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkAw--/SIG=11c7ip9d2/EXP=1252468213/**http%3a//www.the-west.net/

Their premium is a little more pricey. Offered in 4 different ways.

More energy

http://die-staemme.de/stuff/help/paenergy.png This premium account gives your character more energy points and with that the character can work longer before having to rest. Instead of 100 Energy points the character has 150. However, the biggest advantage is the regeneration. Your energy raises by 4.5 points an hour, instead of 3. You also receive a bonus of 50% in the hotel.

Automation

http://die-staemme.de/stuff/help/paautomation.png With the premium advantage 'automation' you can add up to four tasks into the task queue. They are done in the order they are added.
You also see a list of all jobs you can do or will be able to do soon.

Higher income

http://die-staemme.de/stuff/help/pamoney.png With this premium account you get an additional 50% more money when working on a job. You also find 50% more valuable items. The advantage is instant when the premium is activated. It also raises the chance to find a work product by 50%. When it runs out, the wages go back to normal.
Examples:

You would normally get 100 dollars for a job. With the premium account you make 150 dollars.
On your job you would usually find an item that is worth 200 dollars. With the premium account, you find an item worth 300 dollars.
You work on a job and receive 60 dollars but no item. With a premium account you receive 90 dollars, but still no item.
The chance to receive a newspaper while selling them is 60%. With the premium bonus the chance is 90%..

Character bonus

http://de5.the-west.de/images/premium/character.png The advantages of your character class are doubled. You can find more information about the different characters in the chapter "character".

Some others I've tried like Knight Fight, or Vampire Fight their premium allows access to the decent items. All free games can be played for free, but if you want to make a strong go at them, and get an edge, you need to go premium.

One forum I'm on, they have said they have raked in around 200.00 a month thanks to them. Which keeps the site free for all they offer.

No, it wouldn't surprise me. Sex sells. As many places have Evony ads on them, I'll wager the company pays a pretty penny or three per click, which helps as well, I'm sure. That's the game maker's choice to run the ads, and mine not to click the ad because of it.
