By the power of "Teh Tree of Good Fortune" we are getting a new roof
installed tomorrow!!! Total out of pocket $$$ for us should be around

This was all brought about by the pear tree that came down on the
house a few months ago.

Crew will be here in the morning.

know is they cost more. :D

And it won't rain.

I took off, so did SLW. We need to get the dawgs out of the
house for the day so they don't freak.

Do yourself a favor and make a boatload of iced tea or lemonade for the crew. Throw in a few cookies, if you can.

I've had more than one roof done and a little concern for the crew results in a lot less trash and random stomping. You might even get your gutters cleaned for free. ;)

SWEEEET! We got our 17 year old roof replaced for the cost of the $500 deductable after the big hail storm here couple years back.

Ours needed to be replaced. I had gotten bids on it after I moved in here and last fall. God must look after the procrastinators. I balked at the intial $4,500 bids right after I moved here, with all the other expenses. Then I was really upset with the $7,200 bid, so we procrastinated. We would have really been upset if that tree fell on a new roof. :D

The guy also included the vent, which he claims will help with the heating/cooling costs. Hope he's right.

We have a vaulted living room/dining room/kitchen ceiling and the ridge venting cut a degree or two off of the summer temps. It's pretty neat. Have them look at your it venting when they are there. If it's inadaquate then the ridge venting wont work like it's supposed to.

(On Edit)

It will have the ridge venting system, f they ever get here. We thought it was necessary, since we've lost so much shade with those falling trees.

The color in the samples looked much darker and more of a brown. I'm so glad that it's turning out the way it is. I just hope they get off the roof soon. It's getting dark and don't want them to fall off in the dark.

It will be a relief to not hear that constant pounding.

I'm just hoping the weathermen are right, that it will be dry til late afternoon. So far we've had one casualty, a carved wooden animal that I had brought back from Africa. I guess all the pounding knocked it off of the shelf. I'm going into the living room to check my crystal in the bookcase, to make it's not too close to the edge.

You're lucky man, we have a tile roof, and the heat out here is hell on the tar paper underneath the tile. We're getting some leaks because the tar paper has "curled" by the sheet seams.

Best bid so far is $9000.

Is that just to fix the paper and replace the existing tiles or does that price
include new ones?

Is that to replace just a portion of the roof, n the leaking area, or to redo the entire roof? I guess it sometimes pays to live in the Midwest. The entire thing is $7,400, including repair to the damage to the wood from the fallen tree, repairs to the soffit, a roof vent, 2 sections of gutters and the entire new roof (also removing the 2 old layers.

BadCat

It's for half of the roof, the NNW facing side.

Remove and stack the tile, replace ALL the tar paper and replace the rain gutters (they're actually under the tile), put the tile back in place.

So far it's a beautiful, sunny day with blue skies and no storm clouds. They should be finished in time. After that, hope it rains really hard tonight to test the roof and to clean the streets.

It's going to be celebration time. After almost 5 months, St Louis County Street Department finally left out subdivision. It was government at its worst. I'm going to start another thread about it.

The pictures of the new shingles look nice.

It's so hard to tell from the samples what it will end up looking like.

I know of one place that actually has huge sections of nailed out shingles, so you can really get a good idea of what the color will be like...of course this was AFTER I had a roof put on, thinking the shingles would be DARKER.........

I thought the shingles would be darker, but happy that they turned out lighter. They blend perfectly with the brick and siding. I can thank my DIL for the choice. She has a good color sense. We were going to go for a lighter color (but it was a tiny sample). I'm so glad that I listened. :D

Unbelievable. Still haven't seen the roofer. Maybe he intends to give us a new roof. For $7400 I'm sure I could get someone to fix those 2 short lengths of gutter. I guess we'll break down and call him tomorrow and see what's going on.
