"She Saw the Man with Two Parrots, One on his Head and the Other on His Shoulder,Nothing Strange About That .Maybe He was Having an Argument with the Critters and Didn't Hear the Trains ?"

SAN MATEO A commute-time Caltrain struck and killed a man who was carrying two giant parrots this afternoon, authorities and witnesses said.

Northbound train No. 261 hit an adult man, who has not been identified, on the tracks at the East Bellevue Avenue crossing in San Mateo at about 4:45 p.m., said Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn. The train had just left the San Mateo station and was not traveling at full speed when it struck the pedestrian, Dunn said.

Caltrains have resumed operating on two tracks but commuters should expect delays of about an hour, she said.Ralph Gootee, speaking by cell phone from inside Train No. 261, said passengers saw the victim carrying two parrots and it appeared that his death was an accident. He said there were two trains approaching the Bellevue area at the same time, and witnesses related that the man appeared to have been startled and froze.

"I certainly felt it, but I didn't actually see it," said Gootee, a regular Caltrain commuter who travels from San Francisco to San Carlos. "It felt like something a lot larger."Katherine Kukla, who lives down the street from the accident, said she looked outside and saw the man with two parrots, one on his head and the other on his shoulder.

Officers were seen taking two giant multicolored parrots from the scene shortly after the collision. Gootee said it appeared at least one was still alive.

This is the 12th fatality on the tracks
