Kennedy at Duke for surgery on brain tumor

By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 26 minutes ago

DURHAM, N.C. - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was at Duke University Medical Center on Monday for a risky six-hour surgery for his cancerous brain tumor, and faces chemotherapy and radiation treatment following the procedure.

The 76-year-old senator was diagnosed last month with a malignant glioma, a lethal type of brain tumor. A statement from the Massachusetts Democrat's office said the surgery would be performed by one of the nation's top neurosurgeons, Dr. Allan Friedman.

Experts said surgeons will likely try to remove as much of the tumor as possible while balancing the risk of harming healthy brain tissue that affects movement and speech.

"Almost no malignant gliomas are cured by surgery, but many of us believe that the more you get out, the next treatments, whether they be radiation or chemotherapy, have a better chance of working because there's less tumor there to fight," said Dr. Matthew Ewend, neurosurgery chief at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

The surgery was scheduled to begin around 9 a.m., said Anthony Coley, a Kennedy spokesman. The hospital had given no updates by late morning. The senator was expected to remain at the North Carolina facility for one week to recuperate and then will begin further treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital and start chemotherapy.

Not a big fan of Sen. Kennedy, however, I pray for his recovery. Because, no matter what I think of him, somebody out there loves him.

On a side note, why isn't Sen. Kennedy availing himself of the fine healthcare services in the socialist paradise of Cuba? We all know, thanks to Michael Moore, that the healthcare he would receive in Cuba is far superior to what he will receive in the U.S.

Or, more realistically, having his surgery in the Boston area? MGH isn't called "Mankind's Greatest Hospital" for nothing.

MGH isn't called "Mankind's Greatest Hospital" for nothing. It may be that Duke has an expert in this kind of surgery ?These days every big hospital will have an expert on their staff who draws high profile cases to their operating rooms .

Kennedy out of 'successful' brain surgery

DURHAM, N.C. - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy underwent what his doctors called successful surgery Monday to treat his cancerous brain tumor, and told his wife shortly after that he felt "like a million bucks," a family spokeswoman said.

The surgery at Duke University Medical Center took about 3 1/2 hours. He is expected to undergo chemotherapy and radiation in coming weeks, and will remain at the North Carolina facility for about a week.

The 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat was diagnosed last month with a malignant glioma, a lethal type of brain tumor. Experts had said Dr. Allan Friedman ó the top neurosurgeon at Duke and an internationally known tumor and vascular surgeon ó was likely try to remove as much of the tumor as possible while balancing the risk of harming healthy brain tissue that affects movement and speech.

Friedman said the surgery "was successful and accomplished our goals." Kennedy was awake during the procedure, and should not experience any permanent neurological effects, he said.

"After a brief recuperation, he will begin targeted radiation at Massachusetts General Hospital and chemotherapy treatment," Friedman said. "I hope that everyone will join us in praying for Senator Kennedy to have an uneventful and robust recovery."

Hmmmm, given his net worth, that might mean he's not feeling very well. :(

And mine was a good and honest answer.Look if a killer is executed for a crime he commits I will always pray for his imortal soul no matter what his crime. My heart doesn't disolve in my chest because he was executed !

Kennedys condition is painful for his family whom I am sure love him as he is no matter what he has done.
My feeling for what Kennedy has done to this country are in the first part anger for his extreme
Socialistic/Maoist views and his support for what ever leftist cause that will add to his retirement fund.

He has trod on the wishes of those who in the past supported him, but no more. Most of his monitary support comes from outsides of his home state and that means he doesn't represent Massachusetts any more than Kerry or Markey do !

Kennedy has worked against America just as Pelosi and Carter have by going international with their politics and forging private deals with Americas enemys.

I canít argue with a thing youíve said - or remember a single thing heís done for my country that ended up in the plus column. Politically, Iíve always viewed him as riding the coat tails of his brothers, and, of course his dear father - a man known in his time to make more than a few economically lucrative (for his clan at least) back-room foreign diplomacy deals.

But in times as these - I can set that aside while heís not able, because not to do so would be cheap.

I wish him well. This may not be a "cure" for him but he might get a few higher quality months out of it. I think it's cool that he was awake for the surgery. :D

That's so they don't remove part of his brain that controls speech or sight.Somone mentioned that the cancerous brain tissue removed has the consistancy of 'soft serve' ice cream and it is very difficult telling what to take out. They need him awake to tell if they are in a dangerous area of tissue removal by talking to him as they remove what they can of the Cancer .At any rate he hasn't long on this earth ! He is after all a human being so when his time comes R.I.P Ted Kennedy !

As much as I detest the person that leads my country, presently, I would never use the kind of vile assertions against him (when he was ill) that have been hammered out on various keyboards and eventually landing in this forum.

I assume "McClean" means McCain, but who are "Burgess" and "Mederith"?Read some cold war history or google them. But in the interest helping you out Here you go .BTW my memory was false in one regard.Meredith Gardner wasn't a an anti-American spy, sorry next thing I'll be drooling on myself !

PHILBY, BURGESS, MACLEAN SPY CASE FBI FILES
In 1951, Allied counterintelligence began to suspect Maclean was a mole. Philby got wind of this and warned Maclean, through Burgess. Both Burgess and Maclean immediately fled to Moscow. Philby had saved his friends, but his close association with them brought suspicion upon himself.

Meredith Gardner
Cryptanalyst who broke the Soviet Venona code,For the entirety of his professional life, he was unknown to all but a handful of Americans and Britons (and sadly Soviets) at the heart of their respective intelligence establishments. But Meredith Gardner was in large part responsible for one of the greatest US successes of the Cold War.

Harold Adrian Russell Philby: Philby was also known as Kim, after the character in Kipling's jungle story Kim. He had been described as ingratiatingly smooth. In fact, like a chameleon he could be whatever the occasion demanded. The most intelligent of the four, Philby possessed incredible instinct as a spy. In his autobiography he had said that he was recruited by the NKVD (later KGB), and in turn he recruited Burgess and Maclean. Of course, the difficulty with Philby is that he cannot always be believed, and some have raised doubts about his recruitment and his recruiting. However, all four of them certainly knew each other well at Cambridge.

Philby's father, St. John Philby was at some point of his life a British spy, and diplomat. He had been critical of the British government, and extremely eccentric in nature. Kim saw very little of his father during his youth, but greatly admired him. A hyperactive heterosexual, Philby married four times, with several mistresses between each marriage. Both of his second and third wife were seduced by Philby while married to others, and left their husbands to marry Philby. After about a 23 year career, Philby defected to Russia in 1963. Since then, he continued to work for the KGB, as an instructor of agents almost till his death in 1988.

pages of files copied from FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and archived on CD-ROM covering the Philby, Burgess and MacLean Cambridge University spy ring. Guy Burgess and Donald MacLean were British diplomats who disappeared in 1951 and surfaced in Moscow in 1956. There was speculation that Harold "Kim" Philby, head of the Soviet section of the British Secret Intelligence Service, was the "third man" who alerted them before they could be arrested for espionage.

Thanks. I've heard of Philby, but not really the others.
