"But many new gizmos which appear incredibly useful at purchase, just end up collecting dust and taking up cupboard space before too long. ...

Egg slicers are extremely handy gadgets.

I initially thought electric candles were absurd but I bought a bunch of electric votive lights last year and became an instant convert. They're perfect in those fancy multiple light holder applications where you only see the light and not the flame anyway.

They don't heat up and if the cat knocks one over - so what? :)

I don't think anyone sees all of these objects as inherently useless, it is more the cost per use factor. One might imagine having home made fondue or waffles weekly but the reality is that for most people it would happen once and then the offending gadget sits as a reproach to the buyer.

Electric can opener!? Who came up with list? A housewife or some woman who works all day and lets a nanny/maid do all the housework.

I have a manual can opener...I couldn't imagine wasting space with an electric one. I think they are good for people with arthritis or something but the manual one works just fine for me.

At a work potluck, we had to open up a can of something and I handed the manual can opener to my co-worker. She had no clue how to use it.

I could easily go without an electric can opener but I can't think of a reason why I would. I have the manual ones in case of hurricanes.

Okay that was funny - in a bad way.

I use my fondue pot about twice a month from October through March so it's useful enough that I have no buyer's regret but not so useful that it has a place on counter.

I use my egg slicer a lot in December and from May through August. I only have a manual can opener since neither of us has arthritis. I also enjoy my electric knife. Sure, I have a complete set of real knives and I do sharpen them but you can't beat an electric knife for 50s-style stacked sandwiches or for slicing breads for smörgåsbord.

Absolutely! Or for making potato salad or garnishes for crowd or whatever. Not everybody has a sous chef and attendant lackeys to do this stuff.
