DETECTIVES want to question a white British security expert who they suspect has provided military training for members of the al-Qaeda terrorist network (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2001/10/07/wbin107.xml).
The Telegraph can reveal that Mark Yates, from Cheshire, is one of 23 people who Scotland Yard want to question over the activities of alleged terrorists in Britain.
(...)
The 43-year-old former Territorial Army officer owns a number of American and British-based companies which specialise in providing military training courses on both sides of the Atlantic.
Police believe that British Muslims may have taken advantage of his services before travelling to war zones in Chechnya, Bosnia and, more recently, Afghanistan. There is no suggestion, however, that Mr Yates knew that the Muslims intended to engage in terrorism.
Two of his companies, Berkeley and Associates Inc and Trans Global Security International, run military training courses in the north west of England and in Alabama.
The company's US operation boasts three shooting ranges, two of which are designed for tactical submachine guns. The facility also has a "live fire combat house", similar to those used by the SAS and the American Navy.
