J.J. Abrams' 2009 blockbuster certainly re-invigorated what many believed to be a dying franchise, and now it seems that a direct sequel to his take on "Star Trek" is just a year or so away.

Despite the Internet rumors, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who also co-wrote the first movie in the rebooted series, have confirmed that there will be no "Star Trek XII" hitting theaters in 2011, but there is a very good chance there will only be an additional year to wait.

"We think itís going to be a 2012 release, but Iím not sure," Orci confirmed at the Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles. Kurtzman, his long-term partner in crime, confirmed the expectations and also revealed their own timetable for delivering a script.

"Originally we thought we were going to have to have the script in by Christmas," he explained. "But the release changed, so certainly within the next eight months Iíd say."

Why the delay when the first one was such a hit? Well, both Orci and Kurtzman want to make sure that the next one is every bit as successful as the last one Ö and they have no intention of splitting their idea into two movies CONTINUED (http://www.airlockalpha.com/node/6794)

No surprise here. Heard rumors the Klingons will be the villians in the sequel.
