I wasn't on the board last night and one reason was I was upgrading
my Vista OS to the new Windows 7. Here's how it went...

Total time was over an hour I think. I really wasn't timing it, just doing
other things and watching the screen once in a while for any info it
needed from me.

End result: Pretty damn good!:D It was painless and without error.
No problems at all!

Thing to watch out: Outlook Express is no longer part of the OS. When you do
the upgrade it will save all your Outlook info and emails, etc. but you might
want to back them up in case. I didn't and it was ok.

Microsoft Mail (among other programs) can be downloaded for free
from Microsoft after the upgrade. And that worked perfectly too!
After I downloaded Mail and installed it all my old emails and address
book entries were there safe and sound.

Some of us get this stuff for free. I got the manufacture's release of WIndows 7 Ultimate about 2 months and I have to say that Microsoft did this right. There are all sorts of blogs out there with tips on how to use many of the features that aren't well known. It's really good.

Seriously, I've heard that 7 is Vista with a lot of the crap removed, so is a good deal better.

After all the stories I have heard from IT about win 7 upgrades....I stay XP till I get a new system....maybe 5 years from now, as XP will be supported that long.

I go with what works.

I work in IT and I have heard of no upgrade stores that are negetive. In fact is has only been on the market for a couple of weeks and the only ones with access to it were manufacturers and developers who subscribe to the MSDN so there can't be two many stories. I have personally installed it on 4 machines and the only problems I encountered were the early beta versions.

That's what he's talking about. You sound like you have just been doing fresh installs of 7, and yes, that should not be a problem.

Vista to 7. No problem.
XP to 7. Headaches.

Just what I heard. I could be mistaken.

Yeah, my Vista to 7 went slick as could be, no problems at all.

XP to 7 you bascially have to reformat your HD and install fresh so you need
backups, etc. and that would be a hassle.

You should always do a fresh install no matter what Operating system you have. I went from vista to 7 and did a clean install.

Last computer I bought has Vista.

One before that had Windows ME.

I'm lucky that way.

Anybody know where I can get a trailer hitch for a Yugo?

Purchased a Dell Laptop about two months ago only because they had a promotion for a free upgrade to Windows 7. My disk for the upgrade arrived yesterday, and so far, it's been working just fine.

One thing that is cool is you can create a customized theme. For example, I do astrophotography of the planets and was able to pick and choose what pictures I wanted do display on my desktop. Now, my desktop looks like a slide show of Jupiter and its moons. You also can tell it at what rate you want the pictures to change, with 10 seconds being the fastest and one day being the slowest (I have mine set at five minutes).

I have been doing clean installs except for my laptop which was an upgrade from vista 64. I spent some time talking to some people and they have informed me that you are correct about the XP upgrade. Microsoft is working up a better update but they are suggest a fresh install. Back up your data files, wipe the computer then install win 7, resinstall your personal software and restore your datafiles. I'll try to upgrade and XP box see if I can work out a less painful upgrade from XP.

Oh, one program I did need to update after the 7 upgrade was
Skype. I had version 3.8 and it would not work with 7 and
IE8.

I just needed to download the latest Skype version and all
was good.

That's a similar product to the Win7 upgrade, I believe.

I think the n00b is probably right. M$ are desperate to flog their tat to as many people as possible, especially to students. As soon as one dorm kiddie gets a Mac, they'll all want one, so by stacking Windoze7 high and selling it cheap, that's their best and only shot at getting market share.
