Franny Armstrong, a documentary film-maker and climate change activist, was walking home in Camden, North London on Monday night when she was surrounded by a group of hoodie-wearing young girls.

Miss Armstrong was pushed against a car by the girls, one of whom had an iron bar. The victim called out for help to a passing cyclist, who turned out to be the Mayor.

He stopped and chased the girls down the street, calling them ''oiks'', according to Miss Armstrong, who praised the Mayor's intervention.

Mr Johnson returned and insisted on walking her home.

Miss Armstrong directed the film Age of Stupid and is the founder of the 10:10 campaign, which aims to cut 10 per cent of carbon emissions in 2010 and has attracted support from leading firms and personalities.

''I was texting on my phone so didn't notice the girls until they pushed me against the car, quite hard,'' Miss Armstrong said.

''I noticed that one had an iron bar in her hand - it was very frightening. At that moment a man cycled past and I called out for help.

''He said to the girls: 'What do you think you are doing?' He picked up the iron bar, called after the girls and cycled after them. He returned a few minutes later and walked me home.

''He was my knight on a shining bicycle.''

Miss Armstrong admitted she did not agree with Mr Johnson's politics, and had voted for his rival Ken Livingstone in the Mayoral elections, but added: ''If you find yourself down a dark alleyway and in trouble I think Boris would be of more use than Ken.''

The Age of Stupid: walking down a dark street in London while texting some inane message and completely shutting down any meager situational awareness you might otherwise have had.

My best friend got mugged in Detroit because she walked out of a restaurant after dark with her take-out food in one hand, her keys in the other, and her wallet in her mouth.

I told her to go get her food in Ferndale after dark, although even in the burbs, that kind of posture is akin to posting a sign on your back that says "Mug me". I'm not saying she deserved to be mugged, but you never exit a restaurant or store looking disorganized. It's asking for trouble. You have to walk with determination, and have everything organized before walking out, so you don't look distracted. If that doesn't work, start singing loudly. Country music works in Detroit-people will walk to the other side of the street to avoid you if you break out in song with something that really irritates the urban mind-"Take Me Home, Country Roads" works well in these circumstances.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought she was an idiot. Come on - be aware.

And I like the act crazy idea. In my case it isn't much of an act
