Freshman Alabama Congressman to Switch Parties to Become Republican
By Chad Pergram
- FOXNews.com

Rep. Parker Griffith, a freshman Democrat from Alabama, is switching parties to become a Republican, Fox News has confirmed.

Rep. Parker Griffith, a freshman Democrat from Alabama, is switching parties to become a Republican, Fox News learned Tuesday.

Griffith is expected to make a formal announcement in an afternoon press conference.

Griffith succeeded former Democratic Rep. Bud Cramer, who retired earlier this year, in a hard-fought contest for the northern Alabama seat.

Republicans thought that district would be hard for Democrats to hold without Cramer on the ballot, but Griffith defeated Republican Wayne Parker by 4 points -- 52-48 percent -- even though Republican presidential nominee John McCain won every county in the district.

Former President George W. Bush won the district by double digits in both of his races.

In Congress, Griffith joined the Blue Dogs, the coalition of moderate and conservative Democrats in the House. He voted against the health care reform bill in November.

Griffith's party switch is the first one in recent memory where any member of either party in the House or Senate has moved from the majority to the minority party. Earlier this year, Sen. Arlen Specter moved from the Republican Party to the majority Democratic Party.

His thinking may not be a total surprise, however. In August, Griffith told voters at a town hall meeting at the University of North Alabama that if given the chance he would not vote again for Nancy Pelosi as House speaker.

He is more conservative than a lot of others that have been Republicans all along and he has not bended to Pelosi in a lot of major votes.

Yep. He is doing a CYA routine so that he will get re-elected. Would not be surprised that several others follow suit cause a D by your name will be toxic in 010.

The first in a long line of schemes and manuevers by these gutless traitors. They should have recognized long before now that their party was socialist and leaning toward communism. We got rid of Specter,m we don't need a replacement.

Coming from the area that voted for Parker Griffith, he is a piece of shit. He will be nothing but a RINO. I am not holding my breath but I hope the GOP does not seriously help him come election time.

They will. The GOP is grandstanding against Cap and Trade and the Healthcare Bill. They would love to be able to vote for it and not suffer the consequences. When the GOP backed Scozzafava or whatever the fuck her name was who not even a RINO but a socialist over a Conservative is all I need to know. Hell Michael "Aisah just stayah out heah on the poach, suh" Steele and Global Warming Newt were all for that bitch.

I hope Sarah just jumps into the trenches in 2010 and I would support only the ones that passed her smell test. Griffith's defection is a good sign at how bad the Dems are starting to see this trainwreck, but I would rather just see who Palin supports from now on.
