PRINCETON, NJ -- The increased conservatism that Gallup first identified among Americans last June persisted throughout the year, so that the final year-end political ideology figures confirm Gallup's initial reporting: conservatives (40%) outnumbered both moderates (36%) and liberals (21%) across the nation in 2009.

More broadly, the percentage of Americans calling themselves either conservative or liberal has increased over the last decade, while the percentage of moderates has declined.

Since 1992, there have been only two other years -- 2003 and 2004 -- in which the average percentage of conservatives nationwide outnumbered moderates, and in both cases, it was by two percentage points (in contrast to the current four points).

The rather abrupt three-point increase between 2008 and 2009 in the percentage of Americans calling themselves conservative is largely owing to an increase -- from 30% to 35% -- in the percentage of political independents adopting the label. Over the same period, there was only a slight increase in professed conservatism among Republicans (from 70% to 71%) and no change among Democrats (at 21%).

Where are the GOP (CONSERVATIVE) candidates? DIMWITocRATS stepping down is no victory unless we have good candidates to take their place.

What's amazing is that so much public policy over these years as been driven by an ideology that has not broken above 22% of those polled. Is that not a WTF moment?

The idiots in the center are there because they don't have the balls to stand of anything - so when the press spent 6+ years telling them how dumb and evil Bush was - they would have voted for Saddam if he said he was against Bush.

Anyone but "Specturd!" He stuck a knife into GDub's back after getting his support. This was one of GWB's biggest flaws, he couldn't recognize his enemies.

Very good point! Bush was a good man but far too trusting!

I wouldn't say the moderates stand for nothing, they stand strongly for some ideals by one party and some ideals by the other... thus they are in the middle. The assumption that they are wishy washy about their idealogy, vote for something one time and voting against in the next (which is what your post implies) is incorrect.

We now see what voter ignorance and emotion leads to in natioanl politics. BHO was elected on Race, ignorance, and emotion, and not on substance. The tide of leftist radicals aka DIMWITocRATS in power now are there because of the same.

People who believe party doesn't matter and it's the people who count are wrong. It sounds good, fair, and noble but a D is a D. There are more reasons than I'll give here but the party in power gets all the appointments and chairmanships. They get that because at the end of the day all the noses are counted. If D's outnumber R's, the D's call all the shots.

Also look at the voting records. Where are those "bluedog DIMS? There is no such thing as a moderate DIM. They are all voting party line for Socialism. All are onboard for our Marxist in Chief's radical Socialist agenda simply because of Party. It's "Screw the Constitution and America, vote for more DIM power."
