Sunday Thread: Childrens Shows and Literature

Okay, it's gonna be more fun than the title.

But first, cold and clear on the Mountain. 15 degrees now, overnight low of 13. Of the dusting of snow we had, some of it is still here. It hasn't melted because the temps are so low. Even the high temps are low (it got up to 37 yesterday).

We'll be out and about until early afternoon.

TOTD: What shows, cartoons, books or comic's did you enjoy as a child?

Saturday morning was always the big day for cartoons. When I was a kid, the classic Looney Tunes were my favorites. I also liked Johnny Quest and the Road Runner.

Comics were Sergeant Rock, the Haunted Tank, Superman and Batman.

Sunday night at 7:00 was The Wonderful World of Disney.

I read the Hardy Boys Mysteries.

The Wizard of Oz was a yearly favorite. The flying monkeys always creeped me out.

It was one of those rare nights of drinking.

There was also loud music, a dance floor, alot of women & steak and eggs at 1 AM....


TOTD: When I was young I would often wake up really early on Saturday before the cartoons were on..watching the farm report at five years of age was always interesting.

I hated the fact that there never were cartoons on Sunday morning. Or if they were on, it was something boring and lasted for less then an hour.

Today's kids just need a dish or cable and are able to have 24/7 toonage.

Yeah, I said toonage.

Yep, you had to really look to find cartoons when I was a kid. There were three networks. And depending on where I lived, I didn't necessarily get all three.

Saturday morning was for cartoons. Until noon. Then other suff came on.

Sometimes there would be shows on kiddie programs in the morning or late in the afternoon during the week but I was at school except the summer. I used to watch Popeye the Sailor cartoons in the late afternoon.

Yep, the originals were so funny, an dso harmless compared to the stuff I see today.

I loved Looney Toons, especially the Chuck Jones toons, like The Rabbit of Seville, and Bullwinkle. I also really loved the Kroft shows, like The Bugaloos, Lidsville and HR Pufinstuf. I also liked the Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island, which were not syndicated at the time, and appeared during prime time.

Cartoon Network did a Looney Toon marathon on New Year's Day. As I'm not a football fan, I watched it all day long.
