I used to listen to this song all of the time on my bike when I was riding. I had completely forgot about it until a couple of nights ago it was playing on a jukebox at a truck stop. If there was ever a truck stop or riding song, this is it. I used to play that mean little guitar riff and make up my own lyrics to this song.

The cheerleaders are killer. The last scene after the credits says it all though.

Some people grow up Gotti. I grew up Motown. The change in attitude towards illegitimacy is pretty astounding.

It's not all bad, at least society doesn't blame the kid for being illegitimate anymore. He or she is still screwed in a lot of senses, but at least adults don't say as many mean things about it to the kid's face.

I had a conversation with two unmarried, female coworkers with children, one white and one black. They were asking me why I never had kids. I said I wasn't ever married. One said to me "Why should that matter". I said, it wouldn't if I were adopting an older child or something, but I wasn't going to bring a child into the world without being married to the father. They both looked at me like I was from another planet.

I'm not young, and both these women are within 5 years of me. I grew up in an area of the country where if girls got pregnant and weren't married, they either had an abortion or they went to visit an aunt out of town for 7 or 8 months, then returned the next school year. I think even in the 70s and early 80s, this was not the story in most places in the country, even if it was in Grand Rapids. A couple of girls were pregnant at graduation, but if it happened earlier, one of the first two things happened. The girl never kept her baby and kept coming to school as if nothing had happened.

This past November was my 20th anniversary. My wife and I lived together for 3 years before we were married. I use to think it was 4 but a check of a calendar recently proved to me it had to be 3. Anyway, we were more than happy being together without being married. But when we decided to have children, living in sin was no longer an option. Neither of us would ever consider having children outside of marriage. My wife didn't get pregnant until 4 months after we were married.

I guess we were just wannbe bohemians.
