DIGGERS fighting in Afghanistan have been banned from having their sperm frozen and stored at taxpayers' expense.

More than a dozen soldiers joined the program before they left for Afghanistan in case they were killed or wounded and rendered infertile.

But Defence officials have ruled that soldiers need a valid medical reason to join the "free" fertility service. Ten unauthorised samples from Diggers sent to battle the Taliban have been removed from storage.
