CNN should not be scaring people with unsubstantiated crap. When the 9.5 struck Chile in 1960, a tsunami hit Hawaii, but was nowhere near that high........

A tsunami after the magnitude-9.5 quake that struck Chile in 1960, the largest earthquake ever recorded, killed about 140 people in Japan, 61 in Hawaii and 32 in the Philippines. That tsunami was about 3.3 to 13 feet (one to four meters) in height, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said.
................................
I bet there will be at least one nut with a surfboard that will try to ride the wave.
Probably more than one already waiting on the beaches of Hawaii.
............................
You should grab a copy of Larry Niven’s novel “Lucifer’s Hammer”...there’s a part that describes a surfer who tries to ride a mile high tsunami ashore until he sees a 25 story apartment building coming at him like a giant flyswatter...he’s going up so fast his nose is bleeding, but not fast enough...
..............................
Waikiki is facing the right direction if I remember correctly. The big island got hit worse in 1960, Hilo in particular.
...............................
Honolulu Web Cameras:
http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/cameras/
......................
Reports are that one of the islands off the coast of Chile got hit with a 130 ft tsunami.
........................
I think FOX said 8 hours travel time to Hawaii.
That was 2 hours ago... I hope they're evacuating Honolulu and Pearl...

..................
4:19 p.m. EST is the predicted time.
...................
Its probably 20 FEET, the tsunami that hit Hilo before was around 35 feet and was generated by an earthquake also from S. America at near the same magnitude.

Not something to sneeze at though, it can very well be serious.
........................
Not possible. The surge from the tsunami that hit Banda Aceh after the 2004 earthquake was around 30 feet high (just under 9 meters in height)--but even that pretty scoured the land for several miles inland.

The big concern is that the wave when it hits the southern coasts of the Hawai'ian Islands will be around 9-11 feet--but it's not just one short wave, but one long continuous surge that could last for several minutes. That right there could cause ENORMOUS damage to Waikiki Beach at minimum.
...........................
Whoever posted the 40 meter tsunami is posting rumors. Here is actual news report on Juan Fernandez Island

3 meters not 40

http://en.rian.ru/world/20100227/158031362.html

A 3-meter tsunami wave hit on Saturday the Robinson Crusoe island, the largest in the Chilean Juan Fernandez archipelago, following a powerful earthquake which struck Chile earlier in the day, the country’s president, Michelle Bachelet, said.

“A village on the island is half-flooded, people have been evacuated to higher elevations,” the president said, adding there had been extreme damage from the tsunami.

The 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Latin American country in the early hours of Saturday. The tremor occurred some 89 kilometers (55.3 miles) to the north of Chile’s second largest city Concepcion, some 341 kilometers (212 miles) from the capital of Santiago.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center put out a warning along the coastlines of Chile and Peru, and issued a tsunami watch for Colombia, Ecuador, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica.

Some 50 nations have been placed under a tsunami advisory. Areas of concern are the Hawaiian Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and Japan. Russia’s Far Eastern region was also advised, but local emergency authorities have stated that the region is in no danger.

Geophysicist: tsunami approaching HI quickly
snip

HONOLULU, Hawaii A geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says the tsunami was approaching Hawaii a bit faster than originally predicted.Victor Sardina says data coming in from buoys and tide gauges across the Pacific indicated the tsunami should arrive in Hawaii at 11:05 a.m. (4:05 p.m. EST), instead of 11:19 a.m.

snip

Charles McCreery, director of the center, says the tsunami will be "a lot like a fast high tide" and could pose dangers for several hours after the initial waves hit.

PAPEETE, French Polynesia
Tsunami waves up to 6 feet (2 meters) high have struck parts of French Polynesia, but no damage was immediately reported.

Residents were being warned early Sunday morning that tsunamis can consist of several waves and they should remain vigilant.Tonga and the Cook Islands were evacuating coastal areas as the waves were expected to hit later in the morning.

On Tahiti, traffic was banned on roads less than 500 meters from sea. Residents on islands of low elevation were told to get to high ground.Monique Richeton, mayor of Rikitea, said the first wave struck Gambier early Sunday at less than one meter and no damage was reported.

There have been unconfirmed reports that a gigantic 130 foot Tsunami wave has hit Juan Fernandez Island swallowing the Island after the massive 8.8-Magnitude Earthquake stuck off the coast of Chile.

Government officials in Chile have now confirmed the death toll exceeds 52 with that number expected to climb dramatically.

THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER HAS ISSUED AN EXPANDING REGIONAL TSUNAMI WARNING AND WATCH FOR PARTS OF THE PACIFIC LOCATED CLOSER TO THE EARTHQUAKE. AN EVALUATION OF THE PACIFIC WIDE TSUNAMI THREAT IS UNDERWAY AND THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT HAWAII COULD BE ELEVATED TO A WATCH OR WARNING STATUS. IF TSUNAMI WAVES IMPACT HAWAII THEIR ESTIMATED EARLIEST ARRIVAL TIME IS 1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010.

This earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. The two plates are converging at a rate of 80 mm per year. The earthquake occurred as thrust-faulting on the interface between the two plates, with the Nazca plate moving down and landward below the South American plate.

Coastal Chile has a history of very large earthquakes. Since 1973, there have been 13 events of magnitude 7.0 or greater. The February 27 shock originated about 230 km north of the source region of the magnitude 9.5 earthquake of May, 1960 the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the world. This magnitude 9.5 earthquake killed 1655 people in southern Chile and unleashed a tsunami that crossed the Pacific, killing 61 people in Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. Approximately 870 km to the north of the February 27 earthquake is the source region of the magnitude 8.5 earthquake of November, 1922. This great quake significantly impacted central Chile, killing several hundred people and causing severe property damage. The 1922 quake generated a 9-meter local tsunami that inundated the Chile coast near the town of Coquimbo; the tsunami also crossed the Pacific, washing away boats in Hilo harbor, Hawaii. The magnitude 8.8 earthquake of February 27, 2010 ruptured the portion of the South American subduction zone separating these two massive historical earthquakes.

A large vigorous aftershock sequence can be expected from this earthquake.

Is this the same kind of expert who claims that hurricanes will increase due to global warming - or that winters will be shorter and warmer? Or that Polar bears are an endangered species? . . . .Or is this someone who might actually know what he's talking about?

Seismologists and Meteorologists are two differant breeds of people. Please don't confuse us.

Pisses me off to know end when people call my shop asking about earthquake information.

Oh I'm not confusing the sciences - I'm just questioning the assertions of 'expertise.'

My understaning from one they had on was, although the trough, as read by bouys, may be 20 meters, it does not have a direct correlation to wave size. He tried to explain his data, but Rick Sanchez made an ass of himself and cut him off. It was sad, because the guy wanted to explain the mechanics of the wave.
