Detroit Public School officials are evacuating Phoenix Academy on the city’s southwest side, after a homemade explosive brought in by a student went off there this morning.

A middle school boy brought a homemade explosive of chemicals that went off about 8:20 a.m. The boy with the explosive was not injured and no one else was injured, said Keith Johnson, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers.

“It went off on the third floor of the school in a hallway,” district spokeswoman Jennifer Mrozowski said.

Students were being taken on buses from Phoenix, at 7735 Lane, near I-75 and Springwells, to Roberto Clemente Learning Academy, 1551 Beard Street. A school employee at Clemente said parents can pick their children up there.

The student who brought in the device is in custody. Mrozowski didn’t have any details about the student. ...link (http://www.freep.com/article/20100303/NEWS01/100303016/1318/Detroit-school-closes-after-blast)

Blast is over egging it a bit, since not even the failed chemist was injured.

I haven't heard anything locally about this yet. It's a DPS school, but it's a school for advanced science, math and reading programs. Students have to compete to get into those programs.
