Now this announcement was in poor taste, but cause to arrest someone? We have truly become a nation of laws to protect the thin skinned.

A man has been arrested for allegedly announcing a hateful message (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Wal-Mart-Paging-Victims-It-Was-Disgusting-88264047.html) over a South Jersey Wal-Mart (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Wal-Mart+Stores+Inc.)'s intercom, police told NBC Philadelphia (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Philadelphia).

The unidentified man, who is from Atlantic County (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Atlantic+County), N.J. (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=New+Jersey), was taken into custody Friday evening, police said.

Officials are staying tight-lipped on the arrest, but more details are expected to be released at a press conference Saturday.

Several shoppers have been boycotting the retailer since last Sunday when a man accessed the Washington Township (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/topics?topic=Washington+Township), N.J. store's public address system and announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now."

The store immediately admonished the remarks and issued an apology to shoppers in the store and then through the media several days later.

In the wake of the incident, angry and offended customers lambasted the store (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Wal-Mart-Paging-Victims-It-Was-Disgusting-88264047.html) for the ease at which someone could make a storewide page through several phones inside the store.

Wal-Mart said Friday that an internal investigation uncovered new evidence (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Wal-Mart-Intercom-Investigation-Evidence-Points-to-Shopper-88694627.html) suggesting that a shopper may have made the page.
Washington Township Police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office have been investigating the case as a possible hate crime.

Authorities have previously said the person responsible could be charged with harassment and bias intimidation.

I love how they are planning to charge him with thought crimes. While I think this guy is clearly an asshole, the ACLU or some other group should take up his cause.

Well at least he didn't call Barney Frank a fag or something. That would have crossed the line!

Just because something is wrong and distasteful does not mean it should be deemed to be a crime.

Since we now file felony charges against a 5 yr old for pointing a 'finger pistol'
at other kids in his kindergarten class....this is Wal-mart dude is toast.

I think that it was stupid and stupidity should never be free. While I don't really give a shit how the Black folks felt, this stupidity will cost walmart customers and I am nothing if not a committed capitalist. The kid wanted to be stupid and pull a prank on blacks at walmart? Lets see how funny they think he is in jail. Actions and consequences and stuff.

That doesn't matter think of the emotional damage he caused those people! Someone said something bad to me once, i don't remember who it was or what they said but it must have been really bad because I think I may still bare the emotional scars maybe.

For his actions - not for his thoughts. If you wanna make the case that he illegally accessed the intercom system - fine. If you wanna make the case that what he did was damaging to the store - fine. But a hate crime? No.

Like I said, I do not care about "feelings." He hurt that store's cash flow. And if you want to be an asshat, stupidity should never be free.

Funny thing that I've been in this Walmart. But was a crime committed here? Absolutely not. Asshattery is not a crime. Stupidity is not a crime. Even being a racist is not a crime. It isn't like the N word was used. What if he said all white people out of the store? It wouldn't be news.

which would be take care of in a civil case.

If you get on the intercom at a Wal-mart and holler "FIRE" and cause a panic where
people are likely to hurt themselves getting out and all kinds of fire department and
police are dispatched out, then yes I'd say it was a crime.

To me this is no where near as serious, it was just a stupid dweebie prank.
Bad form, the kid should be taken out behind the woodshed and spanked.

The consequences should be Walmart suing him for damages, not the police arresting him.

Then that is a civil matter and should be addressed in a civil court of law.

... Dalton said the case would be handled in juvenile court in neighboring Atlantic County, where the boy lives. He would not say whether the boy has a criminal record, citing the teen's age, and would not disclose the teen's race, saying that did not factor into the investigation.

The 16-year-old has been charged with harassment and bias intimidation....http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/sns-ap-us-wal-mart-racial-comment,0,2280405.story

If his race is ' irrelevant', it makes me think that this is going to be one of those stories that is about to be brushed under the carpet.
