Virginia: New Trial Sought in ‘Fatal Vision’ Case

Published: March 23, 2010

The 1970 murders of an Army doctor’s pregnant wife and two daughters were the basis for “Fatal Vision,” the best-selling book and mini-series. Now, the former doctor, Jeffrey MacDonald, who is serving three life terms, is requesting a new trial based on new DNA evidence and affidavits from witnesses who say they heard others confess to the crimes. A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in Richmond, will hear arguments on March 30. Mr. MacDonald, 66, has maintained that hippies who were high on drugs killed his family. His lawyers, who have been receiving legal assistance from the Innocence Project, said Tuesday that DNA showed that he was not the source of hairs found at the scene. Prosecutors argue that the DNA should not be admitted.
