Reid touts NRA tie, reaches out to activists as Tea Partiers rally

March 27, 2010

Searchlight, Nevada (CNN) – As thousands of Tea Party activists rally in his hometown of Searchlight, Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is burnishing his Second Amendment credentials.

Reid’s re-election campaign describes National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre as "one of the senator’s supporters." The two are at a $60 million Clark County shooting park which, according to the Reid campaign, wouldn’t have opened without the senator’s help.

CNN not trashing the NRA or gun rights, and touting a candidate’s Second Amendment credentials? In addition, at a $60 million tax payer funded shooting park?

In a statement to CNN regarding Saturday’s Tea Party rally in his hometown, the Senate’s top Democrat said: "I’m happy so many people came to see my hometown of Searchlight and spend their out-of-state money especially in these tough economic times. Ultimately though this election will be decided by Nevadans, not people from other states who parachute in for one day to have a tea party."

Reid’s camp is trying to welcome the Tea Partiers.

The Nevada State Democratic Party and the Reid campaign have set up a hospitality tent not far from the Tea Party rally site. "We are serving Tea and donut holes in recognition that Senator Reid just passed health care reform and we’re closing the Medicare donut hole," says Zac Petkanas, deputy communications director of the Reid campaign. He adds it’s staffed, "with real Nevadans from Nevada and folks from Searchlight who support Reid."

Some of Reid's staged support.

Not when he's smack-dab inthe middle of their (political) gunsight...

I don't know how dumb he thinks they are....

It just shows how out of touch he is.
He probably still has no clue that they are there primarily to protest him and his policies.

He should have swung by Searchlight where Sarah was and basked in the love of his supporters, then.

What gets me, is that he thinks he can spin this to his advantage. That kind of arrogance is simply astounding! Another thing, he's probably getting his advice from Zero and Co. . How can they not get that the American public, by in large, are PISSED?

Echo chamber. They only listen to each other and tell each other that they are doing what the public wants without asking or listening to the public.

That is why the US os fervently believed Saddam had WMDs. In the years between the end of Desert Storm and the beginning of this current war Saddam inspected only one unit. The reason we thought he had an operational WMD program was because HE thought he had a WMD program. His people pumped smoke up his ass and told him what he wanted to hear.

I have never heard that point of view. It could be right.

OMG, there is now some reporting Violence at the Tea party protest!!

Supporters of Senator Harry Reid have just thrown eggs at the Tea Party Express bus caravan – striking at least one of the three buses (the red Tea Party Express bus) with multiple eggs.

About 35 Reid supporters had lined Highway 95 in front of the Nugget Casino in Searchlight where they were attempting a counter-demonstration the tens of thousands of tea party supporters who are gathering for the “Showdown in Searchlight.”
