KEARNY -- Police said they were able to identify a Newark man as the armed robber of a local supermarket because he left some clues behind -- namely his mother and son.
Police are searching for Charles "Fat Chubby" Boxton for allegedly pulling a handgun on security guards at the Passaic Avenue ShopRite around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said guards spotted Boxton trying to shoplift a DVD from the grocery store and brought him to the security office to interrogate him. When the guards told him they were calling the police, Boxton, 47, brandished a black 9mm handgun and ran from the building, police said.
Police said Boxton escaped in a white 1999 Ford Contour, which police later recovered. A warrant for his arrest was issued Tuesday afternoon.
In his haste to leave, Boxton left his wallet in the security office and his mother and 17-year-old son at the store, police said. Police said they also had security images of Boxton as well.
Boxton, who has used the alias Chuck Curry, has spent 11 of the past 17 years in state prison, according to the New Jersey Department of Correction's Web site. He has previously been charged with crimes ranging from receiving stolen property to resisting arrest to drug possession.
