Obama pays visit to grandmother in Makiki (http://starbulletin.com/2008/08/09/news/story04.html)

Obama -- escorted by Secret Service and accompanied by a few campaign staff and a pool of reporters and camera crews -- arrived at about 4:10 p.m. yesterday and spent an hour with his 85-year-old maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him. He was not accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters.

her only great grandchildren

Dunham, a retired Bank of Hawaii vice president, still lives in the same apartment where she and her husband helped raise Obama, who attended nearby Punahou School.

an hour, how kind

It seems that she succeeded in raising a color blind daughter but not a color blind grandson. Obama said his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, is "glued to CNN" and follows the campaign closely, even though severe osteoporosis prevents her campaigning. I can only imagine how defeated his dismissal of her as a "typical white person" must make her feel.

That's all the time he needed for the photo op. It makes you wonder why his family wouldn't accompany him.

It was a toss up. Should he look like a family man celebrating her achievements in raising him right, or should he go alone to show a grandson solemnly paying his respects to his ailing grandmother?

The former would be an admission that she is more than a "typical white person," but an actual person, and the photo-op would be focused on her. The latter lets him hog the spotlight, who wants to hear about a sick old lady.
