Supermodel Gisele Bundchen: breastfeeding should be made law

The Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has said that mothers should be forced to breastfeed for the first six months of a baby's life.

Published: 2:42PM BST 02 Aug 2010

The catwalk star, who lives in the US, risked controversy by saying there should be a law preventing mothers from using formula milk.

The 30-year-old told Harper's Bazaar magazine: ''I think breastfeeding really helped (me keep my figure).

''Some people here (in the US) think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?' ''I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months.''

Her comments came after TV star Denise Van Outen said she gave up breastfeeding her daughter Betsy after less than a month because she did not want photographers to take pictures.

''I probably should have persevered a bit longer than three weeks,'' she said last month. ''But I can't be sitting in Starbucks and breastfeeding, because they (photographers) are taking pictures.''

Bundchen, the world's highest-paid supermodel, had a natural birth at her home in Boston in December after meditating throughout her eight-hour labour.

What she doesn't get is that not all women can physically or psychologically breastfeed successfully. Back in the day, if a woman couldn't cope with it she handed her kid off to a wet-nurse or just watched the child die and a lot of them died.

Who would decide if a woman had tried "hard enough"? A doctor? One of the La Leche witches? Some government desk jockey? If it's okay to kill your own child before he or she hits the birth canal, I don't see why it's not okay to feed them whatever you want as long it's nutritionally acceptable.

hehe, I agree :D

I do agree wit the sentiment, but making it law is stupid and not enforceable. Just think, formula would become the #1 smuggled good, though companies would spend billions if not more to fight that stupidity.

My wife couldn't do it do to psychological and psychical reasons, and the pump didn't work well either

So instead of maybe educating people to how they feel breast feeding is more benifical to the child etc.etc. just pass a law and avoid having to do the heavy lifting. Typical liberal.

Women are already inundated with pro-breastfeeding agitprop. You can't go to an ob-gyn without being surrounded by posters and literature on this issue. Every "reproductive health" class will talk about it if they talk about pregnancy at all. The minute that little stick turns blue, your name goes on some kind of breastfeeding APB and you start getting pro-breastfeeding emails and brochures. 10 seconds after a woman gives birth, a breastfeeding specialist pounces on her before she's had time to take a shower.

That's what makes this so galling - we already know all the pros and cons.

For the health concerns of all children, all women must breast feed their kids, at least until the age they can begin consuming high fructose corn syrup. :D
