It will be in the low 80s here today before getting very cool tomorrow. I have too much eggplant. Again.

A friend of mine is replacing her old mattress and over the past few weeks I've been drawn into the bewildering world of mattress options. Memory foam, gel foam, mattress "toppers", etc. I have virtually no idea what all these are or whether any of them are any good.

TOTD: What kind of mattress/bed do you use or what kind do you want? Why?

I just went through the whole mattress shopping thing. I didn't realize there were so many options either. I can't even tell you what kind I ended up with. I was so annoyed by all of the choices I just finally said "yeah, that one is good. Let's go."

LOL! I thought my friend was insane until she made me go shopping with her and there really were 50 bajillion mattress options out there.

Our mattress got leaky two years ago from too much action so I replaced it with 7 water tubes with 4" of memory foam on top, if you spring a leak you just replace the tube.

I have to buy a new one pretty soon. A tip I read to get the best value is to buy a mattress you can flip (so no pillow-tops). That way, you prolong the life of your mattress by years.

I've heard that, too. Are the memory foam kind flippable?

It's hot today, and supposed to cool off tomorrow. Just in time for my vacation. If it's cool here, it's going to be cold in Traverse City.

I have a Serta Beautyrest that I got a good price on from Gardner White. It's almost 10 years old, and although not a pillow top, it was not a flippable mattress. It's still comfortable. I see ads for temperpedic or sleep number beds, and they do look pretty comfortable. I'm having problems finding the right pillow. I think I'm going to order one of those japanese "cloud" pillows, the ones that can protect a bunch of eggs from a sledgehammer. The ads say that they keep your neck cool at night, and I hate waking up to a sweaty neck and wet pillow.

My brother and his wife are gong mattress hunting this week and it got me to thinking I probably need one also since mine in 10 years. I got a floor model that cost me under 400 bucks for mattress and B.S.

Some have pillow tops on both side for flipping, but that jacks up the price.

The most comfortable mattress & box springs was a simple 7 year mattress during a store's sidewalk sale. It was under $300 with delivery and set up. Since I found such a good deal, I even bought a new head and foot board to go with it...all of it was still under $500.00

I miss that bed!

They work good, after I ordered mine from mail order I seen that both CVS & Walgreens had them.
The pillow really helps my neck, especially when I am using more then one pillow to sit up and watch tv in bed...I put the cloud pillow on top so I don't wake up so sore...

We were surprised when we went mattress shopping a couple of years ago - they're not "flippable" any more. The construction was such, with ours, that it is never turned over. It's very comfortable, and the price we were quoted suddenly dropped by about $1500 when we mentioned we were paying cash; they build financing into the price unless you're very specific.

We tried a TempurPedic and thought it was just awful - no support, and you sink into the mattress so it's horribly warm. I think it's definitely an individual taste.

Oh it is.

We had a tempurpedic "topper" on our old mattress, we got used to it and liked it.
The whole mattress, we like even better.

Recently got a new mattress and went with Simmons Beautyrest, not a pillowtop...rated a 1 for softenss...1 being the least 'soft', but most supportive.
I tried out the Tempurpedic and you couldn't pay me to buy one.

I LOVE my mattress.

It was almost that high yesterday. Many spammers have bitten the dust in the last 2 days. It's a weird invasion.

My mother just bought a new bed. A memory foam mattress with an adjustable frame.

On vacation I have been sleeping on a memory foam bed and it's pretty comfortable. At home I have a 4" memory foam topper on my Calf. King bed...
