I deleted my own posts here, if anyone is wondering. I didn't want to muck up your thread.
But FWIW, I don't think things actually were that different back then. My point was that it's easy to look at the past with rose-tinted glasses, and I think that's a dangerous thing. There were some great things about the US during the 1940s, but there was also some not-so-great things.
