How would you feel about it if your kid was driving one of these?

I think Smart Cars are the Red Panda of the automotive world. They are hyper-cute.

That said, I would never, ever drive one where the usual speed limit was about 40 mph. :D

In Austin they have this really cool thing called Car2Go, I'm sure other cities have similar things, but they are open-use smart cars.

You can register on their website then you just swipe your card on the door whenever you see one parked and it lights up and unlocks. It's super cheap and in you live in a small city you can get a full day's worth of errands done for about $4 in personal transportation costs.

There are special parking spaces too all over the city just for Car2Go's so you get good parking and when you're done you just leave them anywhere in the city.

...a grocery cart with tin foil and a lawn mower...

It can't be safe on american roads, when it's that small. I've seen bigger lawnmowers.

I'll stick with the Ford Focus. It'll be time to replace mine in 2011. It's big enough to haul kids or dogs around, fit groceries in the trunk and it gets good mileage. The new ones come with Sirrus radio, which I've had a taste of while driving state cars (they come with it as a feature, but the state never renews the contract when the initial one expires). It's awesome. As much as I love the 6 disc cd player, I really like Sirrus radio. It's a good way to check out different styles of music.

I believe Ford is reintroducting the five door hatchback Focus in 2011.

I like my sedan, because I like having a trunk that is separate from the rest of the car.

My city has that with the Cars2Go too. Also they have the same thing with bicycles. Not sure how popular the Cars2Go is but the bike thing is used a lot.

yeah there's a bike thing here it's far more communist style because you don't pay for it you just use the bikes and volunteer time to help keep the bikes maintained it's quite popular.

not all the bikes are shiny-brand-new but they do all work very well, are safe, and if you need to get somewhere it's a good place to go

The bikes here are maintained by the city and people do pay for their use. A small fee for all day or for short time. People have to use their credit cards so if the bike isnt returned to one of the racks placed all over the place within a set time, they get charged a lot of money for it.

In the interest of fairness you can do a number on a Humvee if you try hard enough!

If you're going to drive a Smart Car, why not just drive a golf cart?

Porkers for me. I hate having to rent "normal" cars when I travel for work.

When the lawyer quits dicking around with my Aunt's inheritance, I might buy a Cayman. There is gorgeous navy blue one on eBay.

Cayman's a good car. They stack up well against a 911, plus you have the advantage of the mid engine positioning.
