UPDATE 1-Microsoft issues its biggest-ever security fix

Tue Oct 12, 2010 5:36pm EDT

* Microsoft addresses record 49 flaws in its software

* Affects Windows, Internet Explorer, Office

* Fixes vulnerability exploited by Stuxnet virus (Adds details on Stuxnet virus, comments from researcher)

By Jim Finkle

BOSTON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) issued its biggest-ever security fix on Tuesday, including repairs to its ubiquitous Windows operating system and Internet browser for flaws that could let hackers take control of a PC.

The new patches aim to fix a number of vulnerabilities including the notorious Stuxnet virus that attacked an Iranian nuclear power plant and other industrial control systems around the world.

Microsoft said four of the new patches -- software updates that write over glitches -- were of the highest priority and should be deployed immediately to protect users from potential criminal attacks on the Windows operating systems.

Microsoft said it also repaired other less serious security weaknesses in Windows, along with security problems in its widely used Office software for PCs and Microsoft Server software for business computers.

Microsoft released 16 security patches to address 49 problems in its products, many of which were discovered by outside researchers who seek out such vulnerabilities to win cash bounties as well as notoriety for their technical prowess.

"This is a huge jump," said Amol Sarwate, a research manager with computer security provider Qualys Inc. "I think the reason for it is that more and more people are out there looking for vulnerabilities."

The geeks who report such vulnerabilities to software makers are known as "white hat" hackers. Sarwate warned that there are also plenty of "black hats," or criminal hackers who look for vulnerabilities in software that they can exploit to launch attacks on computer systems.

True, hackers see no need to break into apple toys, they are more interested in the tools of business than what some sixteen year old girl did with her boyfriend last night.:D

Problem is, that most 16 year old girls and boys can only afford a pee-cee (and lack the discernment required to chose a real computer).

I would submit that Hamp's Mac is riddled with viruses and malware that are emailing Nigerian spam like bullets out of a mini-gun, but neither he nor Apple are aware of the vulnerability because Apple is too busy developing the iToilet.

I wouldn't say they're expensive.

They do cost more than PCs, this is true, in the same way that Porsche 911s cost more than Ford Escorts.

That's just the way the world works. If you want good stuff, you get to pay more money for it. If you don't want it or can't afford it, or if you really think second best is good enough for you, then hurrah. Everyone wins.

LOL (I think). :D

If you'd rather, we could go back to discussing the 49 security flaws in the latest windoze product.

Truth of the matter is, I have to use Windows day-in-day-out for work, and I find the way the OS interacts with the user very tedious at times. It is far too intrusive to be enjoyable. I realise that this is at least in part due to all the corporate sludgeware that it has to run, but I still think that the constant are-you-sures and please waits get in the way. Unless there's a really good reason for it to interrupt me, I don't want to be interrupted by the operating system ... I just want it to operate. the. goddamn. system.

That's the main reason I migrated all non-work systems to Mac a couple of years ago. I don't want to be constantly tinkering with a media-center / web authoring platform when I just want the damn thing to work.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 EE box upstairs. The server versions of Windows are the best wintel UIs for me. Unlike the clients, they don't assume the user is a compete idiot. With 2008, when I hit the log off button, it actually logs me off. For me, that's a huge improvement.

I have an HP all-in-one printer, cheap but it works well. I plugged it into my HP windows laptop. It took nearly 8 minutes and the manufacturer's install CD before I could print my next boarding pass. I plugged the same printer into my MacBook, and it was ready to print, no need for the CD, less than 90 seconds later.

but that doesnt make Mac a better product overall.
You sound like somone who purchased a product for the sole reason that you dont want to take the time to learn about how it works or even how to fix it if it breaks. (and dont tell me apples dont break. They fuck up just as much as any PC) Thats fine. But dont be snobby about it. Thats what erks me the most are crapple dickheads who know jack shit about anything trying to preach to me about how much better a Mac is. If Mac was better than wouldnt it have more than a 2% total market worldwide?

I don't think they do fuck up as often as PCs. Mine fuck up very rarely. The only apple that's broken is my old iPhone, which evidently was my fault, because I sat on it. I know some about how mac works, but I don't really need to, just to keep it working...it just works.

BTW, Mac's OS market-share in the United States is closer to 10pc than 2pc. I'm assuming that's because US consumers know more rather than less than jack shit, but feel free to differ with me on that.

Look, I just prefer Mac to PC, is all. You evidently don't, and that's fine. I'm not trying to preach to anyone.

If I've injured any feelings here, which evidently I have, I'll back off and go and have dinner instead.

I said US not world. The stats are clear:

Preliminary estimates by Gartner and IDC put U.S. Mac market share for third quarter 2010 at 9.3 percent and 10.6 percent respectively. Both firms report double-digit growth for the Mac in the U.S. year over year, 13.7 percent from Gartner and 24.1 percent from IDC, compared to a range of two to four percent on average for the industry.

Mac Market Share Surges in US (http://theappleblog.com/2010/10/14/mac-market-share-surges-in-u-s/)

I also said, more or less, "Who gives a shit?" AKA, I DO NOT GIVE A SHIT. I hope that's clear.

If you really like Windows, then have the frak at it, use it. I'm not wanting you to stop, I could care less if you'd prefer to use an abacus.

And ffs, let's not make this a political issue, much less a religious one. That's about as lame as you can get on CU, or at least, I'm hoping it is. It's akin to me saying you suck because whatever car it is that you drive, it's not a 911 Turbo.

Maybe I've got you wrong. I hope not, but maybe.

Did LindaNumbers go on another cruise and make me CU spelling nazi or something?:rolleyes::D

I checked out the Umbuntu website and it looks very interesting, Zafod. What I couldn't find there is whether the OS will replace my Vista OS entirely or whether it just works around it. Also, I am wondering whether all of my programs will work with it or not since they are MS Vista compatible, or will it be hit or miss? Many of my programs are critical to my work. Any info you can share would help a lot.

TIA

EDIT: Wait, I found the Wubi Guide. Let me read that. I think that explains it all.

crapple snobs need to understand that a apple is built using the same hardware found in PC's. Its a locked out version of liniux and therefore hackable just like any other computer OS in the world.

He uses Linux.

He has a dog in this fight. He has a right to "stick his nub" in as much as anyone else has, even if his opinion is (or isn't) retarded.

faster, easier, doesn't crash nearly as often, isn't full of bugs, doesn't slow down from normal use, lots of really awesome features, super easy to install most hardware, super easy to find and download new software, the terminal can reduce hours of tedius bullshit on a windows computer to a few simple commands on a linux computer, it's free, it's made by people who love computers and for everyone, it's entirely user-made, it's not a for-profit piece of shit.

Windows is like Republicans, Mac is like Democrats, Linux is like Marxism with it's various branches of awesome parties, my preferred branch is Ubuntu.

Kind of you to say so.

For someone so retarded as to be unable to understand how horrific life-without-mac would be, you're just about semi-ok yourself.

LOL :D J/K, as the DUers say. You're OK. :p

Between us, we kept this thread going 90+ posts.

(I won, obviously).
