Anyone watch this show? Every time I do, I find myself thankful at the prison I work at. It's nowhere near as ugly or bad as these jails.

I've never even heard of it. I can't imagine being in prison or working in one. Watching something like that would make me depressed or nervous or both. :(

I watch it because it's educational to me. I listen and learn. Like I said, the prison I work at is nowhere near as bad as San Quintin or Holman or Rikers but it's bad enough. Big Guy can attest to our jobs. Mine is a medium security prison but we do have lifers. And some pretty heinous people. I've had conversations with killers who talk about their crimes like we were discussing baseball.

Loss of freedom deserved or not is something I don't want to watch for entertainment.
Martha Stewart was made an example of, nothing was accomplished in any way by her incarceration other than to satisfy some peoples class envy.

Martha Stewart was made an example of, nothing was accomplished in any way by her incarceration other than to satisfy some peoples class envy.Sorry Rock, wrong on this one

Stewart and former Merrill Lynch broker Peter Bacanovic were convicted March 5 of obstructing justice, conspiracy and making false statements related to Stewart's suspicious sale of ImClone Systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imclone_Systems) stock in late 2001.She lied to investigators.

Prosecutors argued that Stewart sold her ImClone stock only after Bacanovic told his assistant to tip her off that ImClone founder Sam Waksal was trying to sell. Stewart and Bacanovic had told investigators they had an arrangement to sell once the stock fell to $60. All she had to do was tell the truth. She chose to lie. Obstruction of justice is a serious crime here as well. Sorry Rock, but she got what she deserved.

Class envy had nothing to do with this, lying to a cop here can get you arrested, lying to a cop in the US can get you arrested, lying to a federal investigation? Gets you jail time.

No sympathy.

It's not easy keeping sane. It's tough being surrounded by people like this not knowing if this is going to be the last day I saw my wife(we work together). Of course there hasn't been a C.O. killed in the line of duty since 1987 but you can never relax. I do laugh and joke with the inmates. But they know if it's on, I will screw them into the ground post haste and I understand they have the same position. The gangs and the young punks are the big problem. The lifers, they're the ones you want on your tier because they don't make trouble. It's the young punks. But I don't back down. You can't show weakness. Even though you're vastly outnumbered, you still must maintain authority.

When I was sixteen I spent six months behind bars in solitary because they didn't want to put me in with the adult population, when I got out I was half nuts for awhile.
I fell in with the wrong crowd and possession of stolen property was frowned on severely back then.

Have you ever met an inmate where you thought "this guy really doesn't belong here (in prison)"? Just curious.

Several in fact. One actually got out(his sentence was overturned). But believe you me, most of these people are right where they belong. However, I've had many a discussion with inmates and there are some, and a lot of them gang bangers, who are much smarter than to be where they are. I talked to this one kid for over an hour one night and in the end I, hopefully, had him convinced that he should follow another path. He was smart. Way too smart to be gang banging. But I'm afraid that once he gets out, he'll go back to the hood and fall into the same garbage.

Yeah, it's tough. On one hand we all see young men (who are smart enough to know better) get caught up in this cycle, and you want to smack em silly. On the other hand, it's really all they know I guess. It's a slave culture, and probably a worse slave culture than actual slavery.

I think you're on to something there. Slaves want to be free - really free. They don't want to go from one master to another which is what gang members actually do when you think about it. :(

The 'hood' is a slave culture - destruction of the traditional family unit, reliance on the "powers that be" who have complete and total control over when you get your next meal vs when you get thrown in a cell for offending the master. This is the liberal socialist state at work. And then, within it, the hierarchies that form are also person ownership. Try to leave a gang and what happens? That's slavery too.

I only met one who was Black. Seriously. I met several who were white or Mexican who I had no doubt would never see the inside of a prison again. But every Black inmate I ever met was going to be back. Every single one of them with one exception and that was because he was completely innocent.

When I was first released I felt that there was a chasnce I would go back. I often broke parole by going out of my area without permission. Even had to run from the cops once as a result. I have really straightened up since though. And now that I have Deeanna I do not want to even tempt fate and have her lose the only person who has ever promised to be by her no matter what.

I've watched this a time or two. I don't really care to watch for long though,
sometimes I'll be flipping around and will stop on it for a few minutes if I run
across it. To me it's not so much depressing as it is irritating to me. I'd not be
a good corrections officer. I'd want to open up and mow the mouthy ones down.
A lot of the inmates they show are just pure human waste and don't deserve to
be housed and fed on my tax dollar. They need to be terminated like you would
a rabid dog. The death penalty is grosely underutilized in my opinion.

The show I really like to watch is Gang Wars. I like the way they present the
origins and roots of how the particular gang got started and the history of how
it developed and grew. Then the way undercover law enforcement infiltrates
them. I like that show better, I guess due to the investigative aspect rather than
the prision life after they are convicted.

Prison inmates are no different than any other scumbag on the street. They tend to talk a good game knowing that if a law enforcement officer removes a few teeth, the scumbag is going to get rich and the cop is going to be unemployed. However, I handle the smart asses differently. I don't get violent. Nope. I shake my head at them and tell them to gas up(go away). Then that's about the time I take my fat ass out of my chair and do my required cell searches. Of course Mr. Smart Ass' cell is the first one that gets searched. His stuff, nothing happens. His bunk goes untouched and his locker remains the same way he left it. His bunkie's stuff gets trashed. I swag the fuck out of them(Speedy, feel free to define the term swag), throw their mattress on the floor, dump everything in his locker on the now empty bunk. I do the same with the cells flanking the smart ass' cell.

Another of my favorite pastimes is when inmates decide to be cell gangsters (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cell%20gangster). I pick 3 cells at random in the relative direction where the comments were coming from and toss those cells. When the inmates who's cells were tossed ask me why, I tell them because someone was talking trash and it may not have been them but they know who it was and if it keeps up, everybody wears it. The bullshit usually stops.

Now, if I catch an inmate in a cell where they don't belong, this is what I do.(And this hasn't been challenged yet)I would have the door locked out, call my sergeant(when you call for the sergeant to report to the unit, it usually means someone is going to lockup), and when the sarge and troops got there, I'd tell the sarge that while walking the tier, I look in this cell and saw that this particular inmate didn't belong in this cell and not only was he in the wrong cell, but he was on his knees with the other inmates penis in his hand. Believe me, both end up going to lock up. Speedy can attest that this is a label the inmate does not want.

You're a shit bag. But you knew that already, huh?

So you have a problem with an inmate and instead of handling it like an adult, you act like a fucking dick. This is the shit that's going to get a prison guard stabbed in the throat by someone you fucked with and has nothing to lose... And you'll wonder why he went crazy and give your "sincere condolences" to his or her family.

You know not of what you speak. You know nothing of what goes on. You've never worked the job. Never had to use this type of psychology in order to get people who are somewhere for not playing by the rules to play by the rules. What do you suggest, I be nice to them? These are not nice people. You see, there is a method to my madness. I can write charges until I get writers cramp or give them extra duty until the entire unit is G.I.'d but usually it's the same inmates who act like they own the place. So, the next best thing is to stop focusing on the one inmate and start focusing on the rest of the house. When the other 123 start to get on him, believe me, they fall into line. And believe me when I tell you that I am probably one of the more easy going C.O.'s. I don't break anything like some others are apt to do. I don't make a mess until it's all I can stands that I can't stands no more. It's called jailing. What I describe above are last resort things. You write a charge for an inmate being in the wrong cell and guess what, 2 days later you see he was written up again for it. They don't learn from being given basic loss of rec or extra duty. Sometimes you have to resort to extremes in order to get people to comply. What would you do? Say pretty please? Again, you have no clue of what you speak and have never been in this line of work so the next time you feel the need to go off, get a clue first. Until then, shut your fucking mouth.

I don't know why he's taking this so personal. In the 6 1/2 half years on the job, I've had to have exactly 3 inmates locked up on any unit I've worked and 2 of those were requesting PC. Believe me when I tell you, on my old unit(I've since bidded to another job), we used to have a ball. They knew that being caught in another cell meant going to lock up. All I have to do is lock the door out and wait for count. The other stuff is just window dressing to see if someone is going to call my bluff. My bluff was never called on that. At least no one ever escaped on my watch. Can't say that for everybody...at least in the last month.

One thing that pisses the fuck out of inmates is their stuff getting fucked with. If it is fucked with because another inmate brought the heat on, it does not bode well for him. Oh we knew that some hack was trying some kind of psychology on us, but the inmate responsible should know better.

We had our own ways of dealing with guards who were dicks. A dental floss tripwire and baby oil on the stairs always made a point. If you found yourself in a verbal altercation with a guard saying that it escalated because the guard called you a "Spic/Greaser/Niggger/Dago motherfucker" always made for some serious disciplinary actions against him.

Hey man what else are you supposed to do when you have a man locked in a living hell? You fuck with him, you spread lies about him, you basically kick him when he's down. It's called being Real Man. You must be some sort of pansy if you don't understand that.

Dude... you can't even pull off talking about being a man ironically. Me+strap-on=still more manly than you. :p

What BSR doesn't understand is that the scenario's I mentioned are when nothing else works. Some cops get an inmate locked up for BS. I don't like to fuck with a guy's time. Unlike most, I want to see them go home and I don't want them to come back. Prison is no place to be. I'll never forget the first inmate to die on my watch. I was working in the infirmary and he was waiting to be transfered to the state's prison hospital. He didn't make it out of the room. The look on his face is burned in my brain forever. As for fucking with an inmate, if I'm fucking with you it means I like you because I fuck with you for fun. I'm such a douchebag that inmates wish I was their housing cops. I tend to "let them live" unless given a reason not to.

When I was at Three Rivers we had a case manader named Heritage. She was a gorgeous Apache hottie who treated us with the utmost respect. I make mention that she was Apache because she was scary as far as temper. We joked that her idea of disciplining kids was eating them. But she was always personable with us. All of us liked her.

We also had an asshole guard named Campbell who was one of the biggest pieces of shit I have ever known in my life. He got the enjoyment he had in his sad sorry excuse for a life from fucking with us.

On weekends we would have a 10 o'clock clock then lunch. When our unit was counted we all steped outside on the sidewalk to wait for the last unit to get counted before being released to go eat. While this was against the rules (we were supposed to wait inside until the count was cleared) none of the guards really cared.

Campbell comes out of the other unit and sees us outside and yells for us to go inside. None of usmove. He yells again and I yell back, "Fuck you, Campbell!"

Campbell yells, "WHAT?"

This time several of us yell back in unison, "Fuck you!"

He comes running across the quad, yelling, "Fuck me? Fuck you! Get back inside!"

We do not move. Heritage is behind him walking across the quad. He gets to us. There were about 25 of us outside. Campbell's face is beet red. He looks like he is going to have a stroke. Spit flys from his mouth as he yells. "Get back inside! Get back inside!"

Heritage gets to where we were and is trying hard not to laugh. Campbell turned to her and says, "Tell them to go back inside."

In a normal speaking voice, Heritage says, "Come on guys. Get back inside."

We stampeded back inside.

It's funny how now you're so concerned and it's a "last resort" , yet in your initial confession you take glee in fucking with the inmates.

Another of my favorite pastimes is when inmates decide to be cell gangsters.

Just shut the fuck up.

You waited till BSR had an ought against Card to say something and you weren't particularly unique with it, and for someone who doesn't quite believe in the gender binary assailing someone's man hood: why the fuck do you care about a social construct?

Maybe you are ... I don't know.

Social constructs are what? Do you know how inane and pretentious that sounds? That is why the average American does not take academics seriously. If you reject social constructs, don't use 'em. It makes you look like a pretentious hypocrite.

We have a lot of cops like that as well. To me, it doesn't make sense. To me, why come to work with a chip on your shoulder? I want the least possible amount of stress. All I ask is to follow the rules. If I have to raise my voice, someone's getting written up. And they understood this. They knew I'd let them get away with a lot of shit. Nothing illegal mind you, but minor stuff. Like swag. I don't sweat swag unless the inmate is an asshole. I don't sweat smoking in the cell unless you disrespect me and not hide it when I come around. What I don't get are the female C.O.'s who lock up inmates because they had the audacity to be taking a piss while they are walking around. It's an all male facility. What the hell do you expect to see?

Social constructs are what?

Conceptions, values, systems, rules and objects of identification that are constructed by the mind via socialization processes and accepted as real or natural (usually).

Do you know how inane and pretentious that sounds? That is why the average American does not take academics seriously. If you reject social constructs, don't use 'em. It makes you look like a pretentious hypocrite.

~QC

I do my best not to quote writers or use jargon that is specific to certain areas of study but sometimes I talk about things that are a slight bit abstract. I didn't say that I reject social constructs, only that I reject them as materially real or natural. I accept social constructs as social constructs, but nothing more. I also accept the symbolic reality that these constructs hold.

Now let's flip this: If you don't understand, appreciate, or take what I have to say on these topics seriously, why take a position? Why argue against me? Why even respond? That's like me arguing that what someone said in Russian was totally untrue and full of shit, even though I don't speak a bit of russian.

Simmer the fuck down. You've already been asked once, take this shit to the dome if you're this incontinent, if you really can't stop shitting your pants.

We don't like CUers making threats against other CUers, especially when it comes to employment.
