NPR only counted deaths where the soldier openly committed suicide.

For instance, if a sober person serves in Iraq, comes back with an alcohol problem, and dies in a DUI car crash, that is not considered suicide. But to a PTSD trained therapist, this death could have been avoided with successful interventions. To a PTSD therapist, this kind of death is directly related to PTSD and the service that was performed in defense of our country. It is not technically a suicide, it is a death cause by PTSD.So anyone who comes back from Iraq or Afghanistan and manages to die of anything other than old age gets counted as a statistic. Every car wreck, every bungee-jumping accident, every time someone isn't careful enough and steps into a crosswalk and gets hit by a bus, every time someone falls off a ladder and breaks their neck, if they went to Iraq or Afghanistan, it counts as an "involuntary suicide."

Gotta love stats, and the folks who put them together.

My Dad passed away in '86, and his death cert said "smoking". He was a WW1 vet. He smoked and drank all his life, as did Grandpa, who was a Civil War vet. Uhhhhhhh, Dad was 91! Grandpa was 90! As a vet who smokes and drinks, I am continuing the family tradition.

But when I die, I want "birth" on my cert as the cause of death, not PTSD from Laos!
