Wow, after seeing all the guys who would tap the British sperm receptacle, I figured I needed to clean that horrid vision from my mind...by thinking about one of my very favourite women....Ms. Diane Lane.

I have to say again BC, that you have class when it comes to women.
I love Diane Lane. Under the Tuscan Sun is one of my favorite movies.

Diane Lane is certainly a classic Hollywood beauty, in the mold of the old stars. When I think of classic beauty, I think of Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and the women of that era of Hollywood.

Yeah, Audrie Hepburn will forever be the top classic.
This is no such thing as a bad picture of her.
She was truly class personified.

Agreed. Come to think of it, there were quite a few classic beauties in Hollywood back then.

Absolutely, and Halle Berry's portrayal of her was one of the few times that a star of a biopic was as beautiful as the original.

I always liked Myra Loy, both her looks and personality.
She always played the down to earth tough old broad.

And, again, more of a 60's chick but Ann Margret IMO is one of the most beautiful women in the history of Hollywood:

Ginger's a redhead, I assume. I always pictured her as Rita Hayworth or a more mature Allison Hannigan.

Classic beauties....that's when Hollywood had beautiful women and chivalrous gentlemen...

What do we have today? Lindsay Lohan??

Is Lindsay not chivalrous? :D

I don't know that the women of the classic era were more beautiful or the men more chivalrous. I do think that they certainly behaved better in public, thanks to the studio system that saw actors as attractive, if marginally more intelligent, cattle that had to be herded into avoiding the pitfalls of bad publicity in between their demanding job of staying in shape and memorizing dialogue that was written for them in a convincing manner. I also think that the studios were more careful to maintain their images. You rarely saw a candid photo of a star back then that wasn't carefully set up beforehand. The era of paparazzi has given us lots of really embarassing photos that wouldn't have been disseminated back then.

The mystique of Hollywood has certainly suffered from the inimate knowledge that we now have of the personal behavior of the Lindsay Lohans of the world, but was she any more screwed up than Judy Garland? Or is Julia Roberts or Cameron Diaz more sexually active than Marlene Dietrich or Rita Hayworth? Is George Clooney more of a womanizer than Errol Flynn? I think that it's familiarity that makes our generation of movie stars seem diminished, rather than a real qualitative difference, although in some cases, it's obvious that the older stars were better men and women.

WWII gave us the opportunity to see a lot of stars going out and doing genuinely courageous things that their modern counterparts wouldn't conceive of, and even when some of the modern ones have tried, the results have been comical (Sean Penn's boating rescue in New Orleans comes to mind) because they lack the life experience that many of the older stars brought with them.
